i think our most likely bet is to go with the kids -- nip and owings and the flying gonzalez brothers.
next most likely, i'd guess, is padilla. FA.
then westbrook, maybe.
a distant last is bonderman. i want the guy, but it's going to be crazy getting him. it's an auction with 29 teams, quite a few of which see him as the last piece they need. i think we'll get outplayed.
but i think he is the best option out there.

oh, NOW everybody is jumping on the padilla flotilla. but when *I* mentioned him here, I got laughed out of Dodge.
How come "I don't know" isn't an option?

for the record, i was cool with padilla's flotilla when you mentioned it. it's just, well, he's no bonderman. he's a good pitcher, but it's hard to get the hardon for that guy. bonderman, that erection lasts longer than 4 hrs. it hurts, but it hurts so good.
i've been drinking.

the tigers will be idiots to trade bonderman. they need to get rid of that old goat rogers, not bonderman...
and this is all a moot point as the dbacks won't really spend much money on the free agent market anyhow...

from what i've heard from other detroit fans, bonderman doesn't really like detroit that much. i mean, the place is like a third world country, and he knows he has a payday coming up.
if teams don't get compensation picks anymore, i just can't see the tigers holding onto him. they'll trade him before he walks as a FA and they get shit.

Please no Vicente Padilla. The thought of him standing up at a press conference sends chills down my spine. Chills named Russ Ortiz. |

Having lived in Detroit for a year, I can't imagine anyone liking it that much (unless their brains get mushed playing street hockey).

an espn reporter has a story about being in detroit for something, and walking down the street with a friend. a guy pulls up next to him in a car, gets out, and punches him in the face, yelling about what he did.
after some confusion, and probably bleeding, the reporter convinces the puncher that he's not the guy the puncher is after. he just apparently looked like him.
puncher shrugged and left, no apology.
that's living in detroit for you -- it's a constant punch in the face. god i hated it. the gf wants to visit back there to meet my grandmother (who, btw, is a total bitch), and i just won't go. i just refuse to go back to detroit again. i got mugged there a few years ago for like the 11th time. never again.
fuck you, detroit.

Bonderman: AZ will be outbid. Thumbs up
Westbrook: CLE will probably keep him, but... thumbs up
Padilla: Too many "character flaws" to be a fit in AZ Still, thumbs up
Lilly: Uh... FB pitcher, 28 dingers, 37 doubles, welcome to Chase!
Meche: Why? Other than less FB, almost identical to Lilly
Owings/Nippert: More likely than not, but maybe too soon
Other: My vote
Caveat: Don't know Seattle's or Toronto's parks

Well, the option pickup was a gimme....he still could be traded.
I wonder why Levski left Dontrelle Willis off the poll |

The best bet would probably be to keep Livan to eat some innings, keep Vargas because he's still a sub 5.0 ERA guy and will only cost about $2M, Edgar Gonzo in the 4 slot, and let the others battle out for the 5. If it turns out we have a couple options, then we can trade somebody (Livan).

Biggest differences between Meche and Lilly...Meche is 2 years younger (28 vs. 30), Lilly is lefthanded.
Seattle is a definite pitcher's park that is particularly tough on right handed batters.

Westbrook would be *the* realistic option, because his name was out there after the Deadline happened. He would be a great #3 pitcher, but I think we could do better.

I'd look at the Orioles as a trade partner. First, since Earl and I left (there actually may be a cause and effect with Earl), they don't know what they are doing. Second, they need almost everything especially outfielders (the problem is that they are so dumb they may not know this). Third, they have some likely looking young pitchers.
O's stats from last year
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BAL/2006.shtml
I doubt we get Bedard or Loewn although I sure would ask. Of the other guys, I am only going by stats so tell me if they injured or wife beaters.
Hayden Penn was mentioned in trade rumors in 2005. He is 22, 6'3" 195 lbs; 133k/47w in 114 ip at AA.
Branden Erbe 19, 6'4" 180 lbs. 133/47 in 114 ip at low A
Garrett Olson 23; 6'1" 200lbs 77/19 in 81 ip at hi a; 85/31 in 84 ip at AA.
None of these guys are worth one of the Chosen, but Hairston and a reliever might get Penn.

Peter Gammons on Bonderman:
Quote: |
Holding Jeremy Bonderman until Game 4 created further fodder that he could be available at the end of the season, and the Bonderman-Mark Teixeira rumors are already out there. |
It looks like the Tigers want a huge bat in return.

Ah, good old peter gammons. He still makes less sense than a goat on ice.

Lyon, and the rubber band on his elbow, looks better and better all the time. Lyon's a young Sele, when Sele was young. Come on Sele Lyon.
