We give him alot of crap here, but I liked this article and I felt it struck the right tone. And for the record, Gambo totally gets the youth movement, and the caliber of the prospects we have here and on the way. He has been on to that for a while now and often touts them on his show, and goes through great pains to tell his listeners this crop of prospects is not the same thing as Hammock, Kata, et al. So although he sometimes is all wet with the Free agents he thinks they should target, I cut him some slack now...certainly alot more than I used to.

Now if only he (or his editor) could learn how to spell their names... Wink

But otherwise, yes, I agree: it was a good article for Gambo.

That is a nice article. Gambo does a really good job at times. He's almost always better than Bickley.

Hmmm....maybe that is a subtle hint.....several here want to trade Chad in the offseason?

Yeah, it's a nice piece, but:

you can expect them to sign three free-agent starters and a couple of relief pitchers.

Does he really think JB is going to sign 3 FA starters??!! JB already said he doesn't like to sign FAs, much less three of them.

Gambo is allright. He gets the Gonzo issue, and I defintiely liked how he drew the distinctions between Gonzo and Schilling and Unit.

If any of us had to write a column, we'd get major crap for it. I just have a problem with a carpetbagging Jersey boy comin out here to do sports.

That's exactly what I thought! Chad Trady??? Laughing

Between Barden and Callaspo, there must be a third baseman in there somewhere. Callaspo's got the glove, arm, and bat... what would prevent him from success at the position?

Barden.... we can watch him this evening!!!

Gambo goes wacko when dreaming of FA starters. The rest of the article is fine.

Yeah, but how many trades can/will JB make to bring in pitching? We all know that starting pitching is at the top of the improvement list for '07 and beyond.

Bob's lost a whole lot of velocity off his fast ball, and I'm just not sure how many innings he can eat anymore.

Yeah, and maybe a year or three later, we could get a good right-hander to go with him, like that guy in Philly -- Schilling, I think that's his name.

Thank you TAP, EvilJuan, and McCray for pointing out my '97/'07 typo. It's always fun to laugh on this board, espcially at my own mistakes!

I can't imagine next year's attendance is going to look good barring some miraculous start, so I'm all for having pitching auditions all season. Why not take a chance and see if someone goes Josh Johnson, rather than be assured of mediocrity?

i'm assuming by "someone" you mean micah, just because i don't think we have any other pitching prospects anywhere near his level IMO.

still, i'd rather see him start in tucson and be the first callup. it'll give him more time to work on his breaking stuff. we all know the fb is there, but the times i've seen him in tucson, his breaking stuff wasn't as good. it was good for AAA standards, but it could be polished a little, imo.

Prescott's Daily Courier breaks it down for the less-involved fans. Wink

Jordan Kobritz wrote:
Cutting ties with Gonzo makes $en$e

The Arizona Diamondbacks have made it official: They're cutting ties with franchise icon Luis Gonzalez.

Forget what Gonzalez has done for the organization on and off the field. The move makes sense for the only reason that counts in the world of professional sports: Money.

Gonzalez is making $11 million this season and the D'backs hold an option for $10 million next season. Even though Gonzalez has publicly voiced a willingness to play for less in 2007, the numbers just don't compute for the club.

With an abundance of talent in the minor leagues Baseball America has rated the D'backs' farm system in the top three for young talent the club needs to find playing time for several outfield prospects. It's no coincidence that those prospects will be paid millions less than Gonzalez would cost.

The Major League minimum salary in 2006 is $327,000, a figure that first- and second-year players rarely exceed. Until they become eligible for arbitration in year three, young players are at the mercy of their clubs when it comes to salary.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement between the clubs and the Major League Baseball Players Association is set to expire in December, but the minimum salary figure is unlikely to increase substantially next year. The Players Association has always favored veterans over rookies at the negotiating table. Put in your time, and you'll be rewarded handsomely. Gonzalez can confirm that.

The D'backs have paid Gonzalez an estimated $60 million in the eight years he's played in the desert. And he's been worth every penny. Gonzalez is the rare athlete in professional sports who has kissed every baby, signed every autograph, appeared on every talk show, and made every appearance willingly and without complaint. Not to mention the fact that he got the winning hit in the seventh game of the 2001 World Series that brought Arizona its only title.

In spite of those accomplishments, Gonzalez is no longer welcome in Arizona. His story is being played out from Boston to California. The Red Sox have similar decisions to make on Mark Loretta and Keith Foulke; the Cardinals with Jim Edmonds; the Angels with Darren Erstad and Adam Kennedy; the Giants with Barry Bonds. While they all may not be icons, they all have one thing in common: Their on-field production can be replaced at a fraction of the cost.

It's difficult for fans to understand the financial game that's played off the field. Some fans in Arizona are protesting the Gonzalez decision by refusing to renew their season tickets. But in the front offices of MLB, the financial game must be played before the games can be played on the field. It's baseball's version of cruel and unusual punishment. For fans and players alike.

Gonzo has been less than ordinary for the last two years. He is 8 of 9 among lf in OPS this year. He was 6 of 10 in 2005. Gonzo was injured in 2004 and didn't have the pa's to qualify that year.

In Runs created per game (available at hardball times) he was last among lf's both this year and last among 9 qualifiers.

His OPS+ was 119 in 2004 and 112 last year. Better than average for all players but nothing special for lf. He was paid around 10M per year for this lack of production.

If Gonzo goes on to have a great year next or the next, he was stealing money with an effort way less than his best for the last three years here. If he continues to perform as he has, then his performance won't be missed.

I have been on of the few Gono'z supporters here, mainly wanting to honor him for his overall career here and not to pile on him. However, realistically, his recent perfomance doesn't justify keeping him. His projections don't justify keeeping him. The direction of the the team doesn't justify keeping him.

NICE ARTICLE TODAY from Steve Gilbert describing why it is that Luis is so popular, why the Diamondbacks rightfully chose not to bring him back for next year, and why he believes Gonzo will eventually come back as part of the Diamondbacks organization.

Another good Gonzo article by Scott Miller.

I tell you what, for a journalist that is paid by the team, Steve Gilbert is pretty fair. Great read by Gilbert.
