Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.
Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...
[thinks hard]
Bluto: the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
[runs out, alone; then returns]
Bluto: What the fuck happened to the DBacks I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer...
Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.
Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.
D-Day: Let's do it.

You can't assume that, just like you can't assume that DD would have gotten a double if Ojeda had reached base in the previous inning. Pitchers will throw differently depending on the situation.

Matt's point is valid in the post above. Also, webby17 is assuming that EB wouldn't have taken out the 2B during the DB attempt. Too many variables to know what would have happened if Drew hadn't walked away.

And we all know how well that has worked out for us so far this series...

And batters will hit differently. Fielders will be positioned differently. The way last night's game was, umpires will umpire differently. Like TAP said there are so many variables that this reasoning is isn't valid.

It may not discourage bandwagon hitchhikers to note that Game 3 represents Fogg's first career playoff start.
By the way, if the Diamondbacks can snag a victory Sunday, they'll face rookie southpaw Franklin Morales in Game 4 with a potential offensive charge from rookie Micah Owings. Micah, who was slightly behind first baseman Tony Clark for the team lead in home runs and RBI per at-bat, happens to be a starting pitcher.
On Sept. 27, Owings had four hits (including three doubles) and threw 6.1 scoreless innings to give the D-backs a crucial win at Pittsburgh.

What bothered me more than anything was the strike called on Ojeda on the 3-1 high curveball. It was the first high strike the ump called. It came in at Augie's shoulders. It should have been called ball 4 to load the bases.
The Rockies have now scored just 4 runs through the past 17 innings against AZ pitchers. If these kids can keep battling and start pushing the runs across instead of overswinging in run scoring opportunites, the momentum in this series could shift in Colorado over the next 3 games. |
From my vantage point, I think there was more than one time when it was a 3-1 call and it should have been ball four but was called a strike-based on my screaming at the ump through the game and my sore throat today...

On the play at 2nd, the 2nd base ump decided Tulowitzki did not deserve the neighborhood call. Drew didn't see the umpire make the quick safe call, assumed he had been called out, and started trotting towards the dugout.
On the play, the umpire signaled Drew safe at 2nd, and then made the sweeping motion that Tulowitzki had come off the bag in taking the throw.
In the postgame, Drew said he looked up and saw no call, and that Tulowitzki had the ball. It wasn't until he looked over to find Chip Hale's animations did he realize he was still a baserunner. By then, he was hung up 30 feet off the bag.

I would bet my last dollar that Stephen will never make that mistake again, ever. This is one of those life lessons, unfortuantely, that he had to learn the hard way.

That's great you posted this, it's exactly what I thought of after last nights game. I was going to watch the movie today to get the quote down, I'm glad you did it. 3 times teams have come back from 0-2 deficits and I think, maybe, just maybe we can too. Why not? Sooner or later the Rockies gotta cool off.

I bet you're right.
From Jack Magruder in this morning's EVT:
Stephen Drew saw Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki touch second base in the ninth inning Friday, but it was what he did not see — or hear — that short-circuited a Diamondbacks’ rally.
Drew walked away from second base when he believed he was out after trying to break up a double play on Eric Byrnes’ run-scoring ground ball that tied the score at 2-2 and was tagged out easily, blunting a rally.
Drew slid hard into second base as Tulowitzki stepped on the bag, but what Drew did not see was that the ball had not yet reached Tulowitzki, throwing the timing off, and that second-base umpire Tom Hallion had ruled Drew safe.
“When I took (Tulowitzki) out, it looked like he touched the bag at the same point,” said Drew, who has an NL-leading nine hits in the postseason.
“I looked back and didn’t see no call, because he called it so early. After that, I’m starting to jog in.”
Third-base coach Chip Hale frantically tried to motion Drew back to second base, but by then he was 20 feet toward third base and was tagged out easily in a short rundown.
Stephen was asleep at the wheel. Consider this though... If every Diamondbacks position player was hitting the .409/.435/.818 - 1.253 that Drew has produced throughout the NLDS and NLCS, Arizona would have a commanding lead in this series and that bonehead play would not be a topic of conversation. Drew's clearly been the leader in AZ's playoff drive.

Has anyone noticed a Shoewizard post since the end of this game?
I hope he's all right and didn't suffer a coronary in the top of the 11th.
