"View from the press box
Players aren't the only ones who can earn in-season promotions to the big leagues. Triple-A Tucson manager Chip HaleHall, who was named the Pacific Coast League's Manager of the Year and guided the Sidewinders to the PCL and Triple-A championship, has joined the Diamondbacks as a coach for the final week and a half. Nice touch. Hale began the year on manager Bob Melvin's staff, replacing the injured Carlos Tosca, who suffered a broken bone in his foot during spring training."

Just out of curiosity, what's Melvin's background in baseball? Hale won a CWS at Arizona in '86, and played a few years in the minors. I've never heard of Melvin being a former player.
I'm inherently in favor of hiring former players as managers - they're still players in their minds, and relate much better. Ozzie Guillen comes to mind. Anyways, I was just wondering if melvin ever played ball.

Melvin was a catcher in the big leagues for parts of 10 seasons, mostly with the Giants and Orioles. In 692 games (mostly as a back up) he hit .233 with 35 homers. |
