In the days immediately following the announcement about Gonzo, I was thinking, maybe we'd try to find a way to scratch up enough for a ticket package...

Not now. Right now, until something happens to suggest otherwise, it sure feels as if 2007 is going to look a lot like 2005 and 2006... Sad

Let's see how Saito does after throwing in the 8th.

With:

C. Tracy 3B 0-2
J. Estrada C 0-3
S. Drew SS 2-3
C. Quentin RF 0-3
PH

due up in the 9th, it's time to put a hot number on the board.

If it is managed like today then yes. I also think letting a hitter that is 2-15 against a pitcher come up with 2 in scoring position down 2 is a mistake as well.

That's definitely on the plus side; as are the flashes that we've seen from the new guys.

But the downside is that I have no confidence in the manager...

Well, keep in mind Evil that I have nice small blocks of tickets at 5.50 per game for sale every spring. Two tickets, section 303, front row. You don't have to scrape up much...

On the plus side, Vargas went 6 2/3 and only gave up 2 earned for another quality start.

Drew and O-Dawg both went 2-4.

There are only 9 games left this season and it's gonna be a long 6 months before we see our boys again.

It isn't bad, actually. We are only twenty feet or so higher than the club level in the first row. The elevation rises rapidly from there, but the seats are the best value in the stadium, in my opinion. Very nice compromise for those on a budget.

Shoe was hitting on Drew's K rate the other day and suggesting that next year might be a long one if the Young guys, and he expressed particular concern about Drew, did not improve their K rates.

While still high, it looks to me like Drew is starting to cut down on the strikeouts. He is at about 24%, which is only slightly worse than Tracy and Q. I think by this time next year he may well be down at 15% or so. He seems to be adjusting rapidly.

Drew is a real wolf. He still seems to have problems with the movement on the ML breaking stuff which seems to account for most of the Ks that I've seen but he doesn't seem to be swinging as far over them as he was earlier.

He sprays the ball and takes the outside stuff to left consistently. His D is solid and he is an intuitive player. Not a lot of brain farts. I think he'll be an All Star level SS for years to come ( if he can stay healthy ).

It's late September. Are the "old guys" out of gas???

Kent's PV flatulence knocks Gonzo to his knees.

Mike, I've always admired your courage...congrats on taking Claudio Vargas (1.44 WHIP, .277 BAA, 4.96 ERA, 6.70 K/9, 5.32 IP per start) vs. Derek Lowe (1.25 WHIP, .259 BAA, 3.69 ERA, 5.08 K/9, 6.17 IP per start) tonight! Wink

I didn't get to see the game tonight, but from the boxscore and what I heard, it looks like I backed the right horse, just the wrong offense.

No other reason. Can't trust those new guys if you have any other options available, you know.
Bob McManaman this morning wrote:
Since being promoted from Triple-A Tucson on Aug. 18, Young has started 11 of the Diamondbacks' past 32 games, although manager Bob Melvin said he has been trying to get him into at least one game per series down the stretch.

"Just being up here helps get the first-time-in-the-big leagues jitters and nerves out of the way," Melvin said, "so that next year he can just go out there and play the game the way he's used to playing it."

Accept that Gonzo is going to appear through the rest of the season, on the "Farewell Tour," and you'll find a small measure of peace.

Who cares if it would make more sense to get playing time for Hairston, Young, and CQ?

...as it would be so unfair to cheat all of the loyal Gonzo fans in Los Angeles. Confused

Exactly!

My suggestion (made when it was officially announced that Gonzo would not be back) was that, bowing to the obvious and having Gonzo in the lineup for all the remaining home games, he should be benched while we were still on the road. Such a move, while meaningless, really, in terms of preparation time for Young and Hairston (and CQ, to be sure), would speak volumes about the team's focus on the future.

Hasn't happened so far; won't happen, I'm sure... Adds to the depression as we play out the string...

BoMel DOES have to consider what the other contenders would think of his lineup. The Dodgers front office would've lodged a complaint if BoMel didn't substitute Gonzo in for Hairston the other night!

Is this the guy in the office where such complaints are registered?
