After the Diamondbacks get Randy, they look to be set for starting pitchers, but they could use some more bolstering of their bullpen. They will probably be losing a very good reliever, probably Medders and possibly Vizcaino instead, in the RJ trade. I hope that they are still able to improve their bullpen a bit after shooting a lot of their budget on Randy.

We have a couple of chips to trade yet. Brian Barden comes to mind he is blocked along with Chris Carter and Scott Hairston. |

As much as I'd like to give props to an ex-Oregon Stater, Barden's trade value is probably pretty low. |

He was one of the best defensive 3B in the minors last year.

Yeah it is but maybe he could be packaged with others to help with our other needs.

He does have a great glove at the hot corner, but (dispite his improved numbers last year) I doubt he ever hits enough to earn a regular 3B job in mlb. And while he's played a little at other infield positions, I don't think he's strong enough at any of them to warrant being given a utility role. |

Aren't both Krynzel and Hairston out of options? I really don't see us carrying 5 let alone 6 OFs on the 25 man. Someone (or two ) has got to go. |
Well, it looks like we are really close on the RJ deal so now we need to consider the three OFs that are going to fill one spot on the 25 man. With Byrnes, Hairston and Krynzel on the 40 man I'm thinking that we need to deal two of these guys.
What should we be looking for in a trade? I'm guessing prospects or cash since it doesn't appear that we have any room in the budget for ML talent and coupled with our new rotation our pen looks pretty solid.
Thoughts?

If Krynzel doesn't make the team out of ST would he slip through waivers? If so I'd love to have him down in Tucson as insurance for any injuries.
I still would like to trade Byrnes for some bullpen help. Yes the new rotation will take a huge load off the pen, but we are still very shaky at closing out games. And the pitchers in that role (Valverde and Lyon) seem to get hurt every year. |

i don't want to trade Brynes. I've been reading some posts from this site, and it seems like many of you don't like him. I think he's a great guy, and really helps this team more than the eye can see. He's very influencial in the locker room, and has the hard nose, 110% every play mind set. I think he really does a good job, and shouldn't be moved. I also don't feel as if Hariston can uphold an everyday job. He has poor defense, and i think we're going to need a vetran fielder (Brynes) to hold down the rooks and help them through struggles.
I'm all for trading Hariston, Carter, and Barden.

Fist off welcome to the board. Now I think you highly over estimate EB's effect both in the clubhouse and on the field. He is over rated defensively i feel because he dives for balls he has no reason too and makes the easy plays tougher than they should be. Hairston's defense in Triple-A has been very solid. He has improved and is probably on par with EB's. |

I agree with everything except for Hairston's defense is solid. It is very shaky while getting better every ball hit to LF was adventure early in the season. He did get much better at the end of the year even collecting a couple OF assists. But he is still below average on D.

i actually did read both of those threads, and i understand where you guys are coming from, and theres no question that Hariston can produce, but i think we need vetran leadership, and we don't have much aside from Byrnes, Webb, Johnson and Clark. Plus we have prospects like Carlos Gonzalez that are going to break into the league somewhere in '08 most likely. So even if we start Hariston this year, we're probably only going to get one more year out of him, and then we're basically going to be forced to trade him, because i know i personally would much rather have an outfield looking like this:
LF-Quentin
CF- Young
RF- Gonzalez.
than an OF looking like this:
LF-Hariston
CF-Young
RF-Quentin.
I think we're in a tough spot, and we'll be fine either way we do it, but i also think we need Byrnes around the club house. i know espo said he thinks Byrnes' clubhouse effect is overrated, but i couldn't disagree more. I know that he said he thinks SF is going to be the "top guys" in the division or what ever, but IMO, i feel that was more a mix up of words that came off the wrong way. I don't feel he really meant to say that San Fran was "Way better" or anything like that, more of that Zito greatly improved their chances, but it didn't sound like that. Maybe its just me, i say keep Byrnes. |
