Their budget could change if they get a new ball park anywhere in the near future. I think they really need a retractable dome to eliminate the rain out threat. |

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Major League Baseball is closing in on finalizing a new ballpark deal in downtown Miami that would keep the Marlins in South Florida for a generation, the sport's No. 2 official said on Saturday night, just prior to the annual dinner held by the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation at a local hotel.
The ballpark, replete with a retractable roof...
"Our highest priority this winter is to get a ballpark deal done in Miami," Bob DuPuy, Major League Baseball's president and chief operating officer, told MLB.com
DuPuy said. "In order to draw fans down to Miami from (Broward County) they need to know that the game is going to start on time and be over in two to three hours. That's the opinion of MLB and that's the opinion of the Marlins. A retractable roof is essential in making this situation work." |

There's been renewed talks for a baseball park next to the basketball arena in downtown Miami. The problem the Marlins have faced is limited state budgets the last few years - basically a public financial crisis. A lot of cities faced that prospect and you couldn't assume every team would wind up getting the funding. It took years for Minnesota to finally approve a stadium. But the public finance crisis has turned around, and I think this is the plan that's going to stick for FLA. |
I don't know how they could squeeze a baseball stadium next to the arena, which sits between the highway and the water on a very narrow strip of land. The causeway to the cruise port is right behind the arena, and there is a mall right there, too. Unless they are going on the other side of the highway, that just sounds impossible to me. Plus, there is no parking there anyway, so I can't see how the Marlins would like that alternative.

Okay, now having read the article linked by foulpole, they are saying a little bit inland. Total ghetto, but at least there is room.

My daughter just moved to MD and was talking to me last night about how Camden Yards is beautiful but within a couple of blocks it gets pretty scary at night. That's true with many major league stadiums having nice development directly surrounding the stadiums but immediately neighboring severely economically-challenged industrial and residential areas.

Doesn't the BOB's footprint occupy a former crack whore burial ground?

Just northeast, on VB.
I wasn't sure of where the park's footprint would be exactly, just remembered reading about that site in general being investigated. Would make sense to have your basketball and baseball facilities nearby, seeing how they account for 130 nights/yr of entertainment, not counting concerts, etc., and to run public transit and place parking facilities nearby.

Whenever I have been in Miami, I have always been struck by how the arena is sort of isolated and, imho, hard to get to. The water is literally right behind the arena, and immediately west is a freeway. There is no surface parking. If they put the stadium west of the freeway, the barrier of the freeway would set the stadium off from the mall and arena, so there would not be any real synergy there, I don't think.
See link for map (and a mod can shorten the link if they want)

Putting it by the Orange Bowl might make more sense logistically, since there is parking and infrastructure, and that is not all that far west of the arena, but it is a really lousy part of town. Unlike the inner harbor in Baltimore, which at least has a little bit of good stuff before the bad stuff comes along, the Orange Bowl area is a place you don't want to be at night. There is nothing good there at all.
Putting the stadium up by Dolphins Stadium probably makes the most sense, but I think that idea is dead.

The synergy opportunities might not be there, but some sort of public transit station and parking facilities on the baseball side while also connected to the arena by tram/walkways/tunnels/people-movers, etc., would serve a dual function. Freeways are physical barriers, but not unmanageable, and the basketball arena has a negligible impact in relation to a baseball facility - baseball usually outdraws basketball by at least a 3/1 margin. Unless we're comparing the Suns to the D-Backs.

Give it some time. After all, the Suns have been in town a lot longer than have the Diamondbacks.
When the team starts consistently making the playoffs, and winning the WS, things will improve!

That was kinda tongue-in-cheek. It's only recently that the Suns have been drawing. Basically when Nash showed up coincided with the 3 lowest attendance years the D-Backs have had. Besides, the Suns are done a month into baseball anyways.
But, the D-Backs could have a serious competitor in Glendale if they get an MLS team. That season is basically the same as baseball, and soccer draws very well in the Valley. Could see a lot of West Valley folk goin to see FC Phoenix rather than the D-Backs.
