oh, i'm sure they are. you can't really bitch about soriano being "above market value" when subsiquent signings are all also "above market value." at that point, market value has changed its meaning.
but it isn't going to be constant. that's the source of my forehead slapping.
remember a few years ago (offseason prior to 01?) when a-rod signed for a quarter billion dollars, and dreifort had already gotten the big contract, and brown did too? that bumped the market values up a bit, IIRC, but the market corrected itself. before no time, those contracts were the albatrosses we all know and love.
it's like the real estate agent who tells you, "you should really buy now -- prices are going up!" on the short time scale, they're very, very right. on a longer time scale, they're bullshitting you.
