I apologize if there's another Batista topic out there, didn't see it.

Apparently his going rate this offseason is greater than 3/24.

Good for him.

Wow, what a market. We would have said Byrnes was nuts if he signed Miggy to a 1 year/8MM deal.

This was a stupid move for the Mariners. I guess they just like throwing money around. Batista is a decent pitcher, but he's not a star pitcher. The Diamondbacks were wise to let him go considering the price they would have had to pay to keep him.

Well, Batista's career ERA+ is 103, and he's had ERA+ of over 100 every year in the last 6-7 years, except for 1. He's a better signing than Eaton (career ERA+ of 92) or Meche (career ERA+ of 96). This wasn't a great signing, but given the market, this was one of the better signings we've seen. But stupid signing it wasn't.

Not stupid for 2007, in market context.

But I seriously doubt he will be contributing in any positive manner in 2009

I look at deals like this as really 2 years 20 million, and a really outside shot you get a bargain for 6 million in year 3. But far more likely you get nothing of value in year 3.

In that case, you could even call it a two year, 13 million a year deal.

Evidently the Mariners just sweetened the pot for Batista even more. ESPN News has reported it's now 3 yrs/ $27 mil.

What's an extra million per year anyway... Rolling Eyes

Well, I guess it is Christmas time. You know, the time of year when you pay way too much for the shiny new thing that all the stores are selling, only to find out when the package is opened that it's a cheap piece of crap.
