http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2691994

"The Chicago Cubs aren't done spending money just yet. Free-agent pitcher Jason Marquis has agreed to a three-year contract with the team, according to multiple reports."

"The Cubs have already made a big splash in free agency, signing Henry Blanco, Mark DeRosa, Ted Lilly, Wade Miller, Aramis Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano, and Kerry Wood to a combined $272.5 million in contracts."

So what kind of record will this spending bring Chicago? Can a curse be broken by the weight of dollar bills? Colangelo might fit in great with this crowd.

I heard the Tribune is spending all this money because they have absolutely no intention of owning the team long enough to have to pay much if any of these contracts.

If they keep spending money like they have been, they might have trouble finding people intersted in buying the team except for Jerry Colangelo, of course.

You kidding why would someone be afraid to buy one of the most recognizable baseball teams regardless of payroll? Especially if this teams wins early in the season the value will be very high. The Cubs are going to be easy to sell and the amount they go for will be disgusting.

I know the Cubs have spent a lot of money, but the prices on free agents are so inflated I don't expect them to be gangbusters on the field.

That could be... my dad sold all his Tribune stock earlier this year, and is he ever glad. Their financials aren't all that rosy, and when he saw how they were spending money on the Cubs last season... that was the final straw that convinced him to sell Wink

He may be kicking himself when they sell off a bunch of their assests and make some decent money.

Doubt it -- he's a die-hard Cards fan, so he'll feel little remorse over a Cubs deal no matter what Wink He'll get satisfaction belittling the stupidity of the Cubs owners past and future.

That's certainly not a difficult task.
