Quote:
gbraun (san diego): Chris Young of the Diamondbacks...What's a reasonable expectation for him next year as far as ABs, HRs and SBs? Would you rather have him for 2007-2008 or Austin Kearns (if, hypothetically, you had to choose between the two, as I must)?

Joe Sheehan: I'm not entirely rational about Young, who I think was a bad break in spring training from being another great NL rookie last year. I can't predict his playing time, but he should be the everyday CF, and with that would be a 20/20 guy, easy.

The main developmental issue I see is that the D'backs need to let him bat lower in the order. He's Curtis Granderson or Corey Patterson (better than both, of course), and falling into a "fast guy/leadoff" trap could create a cycle of failure.

I really, really like the guy, and at that, I may not be the BPer who's highest on him.

jlewando (DC): Love your work, Joe. How do you see Dana Eveland fitting into the D-backs plans next season?

Joe Sheehan: I'm a fan. The D'backs have had some issues in the back of the rotation, and I like Eveland more than the solutions they had in 2006. He might have a home-run issue, but overall, I think he's a 4.20 ERA guy.

Be prepared for another year of me pimping the Diamondbacks.

Welcome rgndvo.

For those that don't know, he is a long time poster from the ESPN board, and one of the "sane voices in the wilderness"

Very happy you made the trek over here to join us.

As for Joe Sheehan......a very smart man.

I saw Chris Young play in every home game he played for Tucson. The guy is great in the field and at the plate is great against RHP and can hit everything but the breaking ball. His speed is as advertised and he makes even the most difficult plays in center look like they were easy. He also is a pretty easy going guy that likes to joke around with the staff down there.

You know who else couldn't hit the curve ball? Pedro Cerrano.

"Ahh, Jesus. He is a very great man, but he no help with the curve ball."
"You trying to say Jesus Christ couldn't hit a curve ball?"

"Hats for Bats. Keep bats warm."

I think that hitting the breaking ball is part of his development. He has the talent to figure it out he just struggled this last year a bit with it.

Also "Looks like Joe Boo needs a refill"

very few players can consistently hit the breaking ball. in fact, plenty of players become great by just recognizing the breaking ball and laying off... and hammering the fastball instead. remember, not that many pitchers, even in the majors, can consistently throw breaking balls for strikes. and a walk is almost as good as a hit...

I should have said he can't hit it and can't lay off of it. He needs to learn to recognize it and lay off of it.

It's funny because his track record tells me that he's been doing a pretty good job over the last couple of years learning to recognize and lay off the breaking ball. Granted, he's certainly still working on his pitch recognition, but to say that he "can't hit it and can't lay off it" is stretching it about 7 miles too far. The guy isn't Reggie Abercrombie...

Not to question you because i know I am new but how many games have you seen live where Chris Young was in center field outside of his late season call up?

I personally have not seen even one game with Chris Young in CF. If you want to say that you have to see games to know how good a player is, then by all means you're the expert.

All I'm saying is that Chris Young has been cutting down on his strikeouts over the years while maintaining a healthy walk rate, and still hitting for both good average and excellent power.

To me, that means that he's improving his plate discipline while maintaining his power. Whether he can hit a breaking ball isn't that important; what is important is that he certainly has been making progress in recognizing breaking balls and laying off them... which was your claim.

Whether he'll be an expert in recognizing and hitting the breaking ball one day is a different story. But he doesn't have to become an expert at that to become a superstar. And again, I don't question your claim that he cannot hit the breaking ball; I think that you statement that he cannot lay off it is a wild ass exaggeration.

So anyhow, hit me with the "I've seen it with my own two eyes, so by god..."

My only point was that you can't tell which pitches are breaking balls and which weren't. His patience at the plate got much better though out the season but it was just as much laying off of high fastballs and learning to read left handed pitchers as much as it was the breaking ball. The guy is talented and I don't dispute your argument that you can be a very successful player without hitting the breaking ball. I think you can be and that Chris Young will be. Thanks for jumping on the new guy just trying to make a point. Just don't act like "I've read the stats so I know all there is about Chris Young" just like you accuse me of acting like i know everything from seeing him.

Sorry I came off sounding rough around the edges here. Long day.

Welcome aboard. Do stay.

But we do like it when posters explain what they mean when they say "he can't lay off and he can't hit".

Again, sorry about sounding gruff. And do hang around

No problem man. I will explain comments like that more throughly in the future. Hope I didn't come off as too arrogant. I am just happy to have found a board to actually talk Dbacks baseball with more than one other fan and have some creative freedom to talk about it.

Glad you are here ESPO. Welcome aboard. Yes....levski can be incorrigible. But we tolerate him cuz he's kinda smart. Wink

We tend challenge people around here to defend their ideas and theories. It can get kinda intense, but you have already aquitted yourself nicely. I am sure you will have fun talking baseball here.

Thanks for the welcome. Glad to hear you guys like a good intense exchange of ideas. This board seems much more liberal than others I have been on and am excited for some great in depth and smart Dbacks chat.
