The Giants are talking to free agents David Riske, Russ Ortiz and Doug Brocail as they attempt to add pitching depth.
Riske would be a nice signing, though he's not the alternative to Armando Benitez that the team is looking for. Ortiz would likely compete for a rotation spot if signed.

Now the Diamondbacks will have both Gonzo AND Donut Boy gunning for them in our division.
Please God, make it happen.

Great news for us. Lets hope the rest of our scrubs from the past few years wind up in the NL West.

Ortiz would stand a better chance competing for the last French cruller

Maybe we could trade 'em Livan back for Matt Cain?
I mean with Aurilia back and a possible Ortiz signing... I heard Santiago's trying to make a come-back as well.

Coming from the school of, "If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all..."
It'd be just our luck to have Ortiz make the Gnats, and recover some (if not all) of what we'd hoped to get when we signed him...
Ditto for Gonzo with the Doggers...
Mind you, I don't think either will happen... But it would be just my luck...

Time for me to forward this bit of news around to the Giants fans in my office and see how many heart attacks and vomiting fits I can induce.

My resident Giants fan in my office suggested his team may bring back Eric Davis and Andres Gallaraga at this rate. Poor guy knows he's in for a couple of tough years.

Worst. Gameplan. Ever.
The Giants. Apparently, their Winter Meetings plan of attack was to make an old team even older and not give a moment's thought to the rotation. After the loss of Schmidt, their rotation now consists of Matt Cain, Matt Morris and, well, anything goes after that. If Barry Bonds would have headed elsewhere, this is the worst team in the NL West. |

Here's to hoping that all of Barry's karma comes back to help him this hear. |

and it gets even better. according to this article, the giants are now deferring salary -- hopefully they like how it feels, and start doing it more.

Deferring salary? They will soon be up the proverbial creek without a canoe. I can't believe they're risking financial problems to sign a bunch of old farts to grossly inflated free agent salaries. |

On the OH MY GOD front:
Quote: |
Russ Ortiz-R- Orioles Dec. 12 - 12:23 pm et
The Giants are looking into bringing in free agents Russ Ortiz and Bruce Chen to compete for rotation spots.
Ortiz has been trying to up his stock in the Puerto Rican League, where he has a 2.40 ERA in 15 innings. "He's pitched six scoreless innings in a row and hit 94 (mph)," agent John Boggs said. "We've always believed the last couple of years were an aberration. He couldn't go that bad that fast, and nothing was really wrong with him." But he really did go that bad that fast. He had a 7.33 ERA in 178 innings the last two years, and it's not like the numbers were deceptive at all. If anything, he looked even worse than that. Since the Diamondbacks are on the hook for another $16 million over the next two years, Ortiz would receive only the minimum salary from whatever team signs him. He's holding out for a 40-man roster spot rather than a minor league contract.

Don't do it, Russ! Insist on something approaching real free-agent money, as well as a guaranteed spot on the 40-man roster! Make it while there are still idiots out there willing to offer you a contract!

If he really can hit 94 on the gun again with any regularity, he could become a useful pitcher again, as abhorrent as that may seem. |

Abhorrent because Arizona is paying him $16M to pitch for another club.
He was sucko here AND in Baltimore. His stats were declining. Now he finds the Fountain of Youth down in Puerto Rico?!
Hell, JB should take a chance on him then... for free...
That's a joke, btw.

94 my ass. The only 94 Ortiz can reach is the 94oz steak at Joe's Steakhouse in Midland, TX. Eat it in 1hr or less and it's free!

The denial of recognizing a player's own diminishing skills is really quite remarkable in some cases....
Amazing to me... he really thinks he should be pitching in MLB... |

My brother on a trip out here from Bama tried to do eat that steak once. Lets just say he ended up with a stomach ache and a hefty bill.
