Out
Drew: .891 OPS
Lofton: .763 OPS
In
Gonzo .796 OPS
Pierre .718 OPS
Anyway you slice it, thats NOT getting better on offense.
Now if Ned holds on to Penny, the addition of Schmidt gives the Dodgers the best rotation in the division, easily. So I guess it's safe to say the Dodgers traded offense for pitching
If Ned Trades Penny and Ethier for Wells, then the offense gets better most likely, but the pitching gets weaker.
And the offense getting better is not a slam dunk. Wells had an .899 OPS for a 126 OPS+ last year, but that was his second best season of his career. His Career OPS is .828, and Career OPS + is 112
Ethier had an .842 OPS last year, for a 113 OPS+
I'm not saying Wells would not be an upgrade over Ethier, he would....but the difference may not be as great as some people think. And the cost to get that small upgrade is Penny and a future fixture of the club.
So far.....color me unimpressed with the Dodger offseason. |

Ned is building the Dodgers like most of the regular MLB board posters would build their team. |

As Gonzo's veteran mind oh so adroitly noted this week, “This reminds me of the way the Diamondbacks built their team — veteran guys who want to win.”

If Schmidt pitches like RJ circa 2001, Penny like Schilling v. 2001 and Gonzo hits 57 HR's, then this might be true. |

Wow, of all the Metallica references I've seen pulled out on this board, this one made me think the hardest. Kudos. My nickname is 'Metallica' to a lot of my friends, and I nearly couldn't come up with 2x4 on that one.

This would be my guess as well. If only the Dodgers would trade him to the D-backs for Byrnes...

From todays LA Times, Plaschke
Quote: |
The combination of Penny and one of the Dodgers' prospects would fetch a hitter like Toronto's Vernon Wells or Atlanta's Andruw Jones.
Yes, both players are available because they will be free agents after next season. So, yes, that means they could be high-priced rentals.
But if they give the Dodgers a chance to win a championship, wouldn't that make them priceless rentals?
The same save-our-kids Dodgers fans Colletti smartly ignored last summer when he traded prospects to make the playoffs are surely hoping he will listen to them now.
He shouldn't. And he won't.
"If it takes a kid or two to acquire somebody we really like, then we'll do it," Colletti says. "If there's a player out there who can make a difference, and if we can have him for a little while, we'll do it." |
You go Ned!!

I think I just found a warm place in my heart for both Bill Plaschke and Ned Colletti.
This may be the time for all of us "Dodger fans" to start an email campaign to Ned encouraging him to please trade those kids for more, as Gonzo so eloquently stated this week, "veteran guys who want to win." |
