Jason Schmidt-S- Giants Dec. 6 - 1:22 pm et

The Dodgers have reached a preliminary agreement on a three-year, $47 million contract with right-hander Jason Schmidt, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthak reports.
Schmidt chose the Dodgers over the Cardinals and Mariners. This looks a lot like the Rafael Furcal deal, in that the Dodgers got Schmidt to settle for fewer years in return for a higher annual salary. Scott Boras, who represents Barry Zito, has to be pleased to see Schmidt ending up at nearly $16 million per year.

well, shit.

i'm AMAZED schmidt didn't hold out for a 4th or 5th year. i would have sworn he would go that route. 3/47 seems rather... sane.

well, shit. i guess we still get to face schmidt several times a year, now. dammit.

If anyone's looking for sour grapes to take some of the sting from this signing, Jason does have a history of injuries and will be 34 when the season starts. Confused

If the Dodgers *don't* get Manny, who will drive in runs? Is Kent coming back? And even if he does, he's no spring chicken and was hurt a lot last year. I'm not too concerned...yet.

Now that the Dodgers have put together the best rotation in the division, watch them dismantle it before it even takes the field...

Brad Penny-S- Dodgers Dec. 6 - 1:34 pm et

With Jason Schmidt reportedly choosing the Dodgers, it's more likely that Brad Penny will be dealt this winter.

As things stand now, the Dodgers have a rotation of Schmidt, Penny, Derek Lowe, Randy Wolf and Chad Billingsley. Penny's departure would put Mark Hendrickson, Hong-Chih Kuo and Brett Tomko back into the mix. Penny is owed $18 million over the next two years or $24.75 million for the next three years, making him something of a bargain in this market.

Brandon Webb
Brad Penny
Doug Davis
Livan Hernandez
Edgar Gonzalez

NOW who has the best rotation in the NL West? Laughing

Never happen, but I can dream... Embarassed

Why would they trade Penny? Retards.

Shit.....If schmidt were willing to sign a 3 year deal, the D backs should have gone after him.

Unless you believe he collapses in 2007 or 2008

Schmidt on the Dodgers in 2007 is a fucking disaster for the dbacks. Hopefully, Schmidt on the Dodgers in 2008 and 2009 will be disaster for the them.

I would say they'd be a better team with Ramirez than Penny.

Seems like Gonzo is heading to La La Land.

They got Schmidt. Good for them. They trade Penny and sign Gonzo? One step forward and two steps back...

EDIT- Signing Luis also eliminates them from getting Manuel Ramirez.

I cna't imagine why the Dodgers are considering Gonzo. Unless they're looking at his career production at Dodger Stadium the way we looked at Shawn Green's at BOB.

Schmidt has lost his velocity, and is in his downward spiral. This is a last gasp by the Doggers to get it in '07, but Schmidt will be shit in '08 and '09. Well he'll be ok, but not $16M good.

i tend to agree with dirtygary on this. i don't know -- i just had a real bad feeling about the dbacks going after schmidt. but back then i was thinking that schmidt would be anywhere from 4 to 6 years. and i just figured his shoulder was gonna blow after a year or two.

but i might do this deal for 2 good years and one DL year. so let's hope the end is near for good mr. schmidt.

I don't think Schmidt is very happy if he read the headline about his signing on foxsports.com : "Schmidt Happens." Question

mlbtraderumors.com reported earlier that the Schmidt deal wasn't done and he was still going to talk with the Cards. ESPN seems to think it's a done deal, I'd assume they're correct.
