Count me in on a Tucson trip. I don't really drink anymore so I make a great DD for those of you that plan on enjoying a few cold ones. |

Hells yeah! I come from SAN FRANCISCO every year to Tucson Spring Training.
Of course it helps that my gal's mom lives in Tucson...
But I'd make the journey anyway!

my bday is march 2nd, and usually on or about that day, they're having the first of the ST games at TEP. so the girl always gets me a bottle of 12 year old whiskey or scotch (alternates years), and i open it first thing in the morning and fill my flask (a gift from our first year together). i nurse it all day, and by the afternoon game, between the whiskey and the sun, i'm good and toasted.

What the President meant to say was, "I saw a roadrunner and it looked good to me: good speed on the basepaths, able to cover a lot of range, but not much with the bat..."

my bday is 3/2, so i'll be at that game. it's a tradition -- the gf takes me every year and gets me super drunk. anyone else free that day? it's a 1:05 start at TEP vs the white sox. friday afternoon right before a weekend of split squad games.
if anyone's interested in meeting up, send me a PM. i'm always interested in meeting people from the board, and it's a lot of fun every year, getting shit faced in the sun, celebrating the return of baseball, etc. and last year on my bday game upton got an extra base hit, too. and i saw a roadrunner. it looked at me.

Teacher ditch day on March 22. Dbacks at Gnats.
Got tix in the second row left field.
Close enough to peg Bonds in the head.
Is a D battery better than a 9 volt for such purposes? |

warning: the following long rambling post is due to sleep deprivation. it is a nostalgic look back on the crappiness that was the 1989 detroit tigers, and only tangentially relates to dan's battery post. apologies.
as a wee lad growing up in detroit, we used to sneak wrist rocket slingshots into tiger stadium under our coats, and then we'd launch air attacks on the opposing OFers. D batteries hit hardest, but they used to pat us kids down coming through the gates, and they'd find those sometimes. C batteries are easier to hide and still smack the shit out of people. 9 volts aren't bad, but you get a lot of weird english on the trajectory. FWIW.
i remember a game in 89, i think. the white sox were kicking the shit out of the tigers, who were limping to a miserable end to a miserable season. it was september, but i can't remember when. not close enough to the merciful end of the season. but the fucking white sox scored a shitload of runs in the top of the first after fucking jeff robinson walked the first batter and left the game. then nunez came in and sucked ass.
i just spent ten minutes cruising retrosheet, and i found the game here. take a look at the first inning summary:
Quote: |
WHITE SOX 1ST: Johnson walked; NUNEZ REPLACED ROBINSON
(PITCHING); Fletcher walked (walk was charged to Robinson)
[Johnson to second]; Robinson left with strained tendon in
elbow; Calderon doubled to right [Johnson scored, Fletcher
to third]; Martinez reached on an error on a sacrifice fly by
Lusader [Fletcher scored (RBI), Calderon to third, Martinez to
second]; Boston singled to right [Calderon scored, Martinez
scored (error by Lusader) (unearned), Boston to second (on
throw)]; Sosa struck out; Lyons was walked intentionally;
Karkovice struck out; Guillen singled to right [Boston scored
(unearned), Lyons to third, Guillen to second (error by
Lusader)]; Johnson singled to left [Lyons scored (unearned),
Guillen scored (unearned), Johnson out at second (left to
second)]; 7 R (3 ER), 4 H, 3 E, 0 LOB. White Sox 7, Tigers 0. |
now, this had most of us kids a little pissy. sucking was one thing, but sucking this badly hurt in a different kind of way. but still, we hadn't really decided yet who we'd target with our wrist rockets, or when we'd go for it (you really only had a few minutes after you launched until security 86'd you). then, the tigers came to bat:
Quote: |
TIGERS 1ST: Pettis lined to center; Heath struck out; Whitaker
flied to center; 0 R, 0 H, 0 E, 0 LOB. White Sox 7, Tigers 0. |
this painful summary doesn't do it justice. the entire tiger's first took maybe, tops, 30 seconds. IIRC, pettis and whitaker went for either the 1st or 2nd pitch, and i don't think heath ever took the bat off his shoulder. asses.
so, we just stared in disbelief as the white sox CF caught a lazy flyball, and we let all hell fly loose. we launched everything we had at those chicago bastards. i've never seen OFers run so quickly off the field. and my brother nailed lance johnson in the back between the shoulder blades with a C battery, too, right as i got him in the leg (admittedly on a hop) with a D). that bastard would end up going 3 for 5 against us that day, with a walk, 3 rbi's, and 5 put outs. granted, that performance hadn't happened, and maybe we inspired him to kick the tigers' asses, but i still say that bastard deserved it.
got kicked out, but it was probably better than watching the rest of the game anyway.
so, yeah dan, i'd go for C batteries for stealth, D batteries when you absolutely gotta nail that fucker, and 9 volts only for wackiness and unpredictability.
oh, and before i get the "tsk tsk, what an asshole you are" speech from anyone, i was 8 years old. so you have to give me some leeway. if you don't, i still have my wrist rocket. and a drawer full of batteries. you have been warned.

I suppose the 9 volt has a knuckleball effect compared to the C-cell. Good thing you weren't chucking those big ass 6 volt lantern batteries. |
