Just a couple tidbits; I'm in a hurry:

Quote:
im_conti: Hi. With Luis Gonzalez gone now, who will be the starting left fielder?

Hall: At this point it will likely be Eric Byrnes. We have Carlos Quentin in right, Chris Young in center and Byrnes in left. We also have Jeff DaVanon and Scott Hairston in the mix. It will be odd not seeing Gonzo in left, but even odder seeing him in a Dodgers uniform. However, the baseball staff felt strongly that we needed to make this move to get the young talent on the field. We believe this will work out, especially in the long run.

Quote:
rereit: What happened with the rumored Mark Mulder deal?

Hall: Our staff is still considering. As you know, this is a player with a medical history, so all of the necessary due diligence needs to take place.

Hmm... so it's ARI saying no?

Quote:
tswinders: Are we still in the hunt for another starter? And what will happen with Hairston? Thanks. Tom.

Hall: Thanks for the question, Tom. Scott will be in the mix for a roster spot should he still be here come Spring Training. He has proven he can produce at the big-league level. Yes, we are very interested in getting another starter, but will likely need to be creative in doing so, through the trade route.

Good to see "should he still be here come Spring Training" Hairston's on the radar. Mad

Translation: He is being shopped, and if they find no takers, of course he is in the mix for a roster spot...what are they gonna do? Release the PCL offensive player of the year?

nice to see that not everyone here is on the "hairston is just a AAAA" player bandwagon. Hairston needs to be given a real shot.

goorange: Hey, Derrick. Do you see the younger players playing a bigger role in 2007?

Hall: We definitely do. And it is refreshing to know that some of our longer-tenured guys like Webb and Chad Tracy are also young. Add Conor Jackson, Orlando Hudson, Stephen Drew, Quentin, Young, Miguel Montero, Chris Snyder, and Byrnes, who will all be playing this year, and yes, we believe the youth will definitely play a big role.

Byrnes? Eric Byrnes? He's young?

Give me a ##### break

I wanted to see the Hall's answer to Hairston. Glad to see he tried to answer it.

The only solice I find in this whole thing is that E Byrnes will be gone by this time next year.

This whole Hairston/Byrnes thing has been like a great shit stain that the FO has proudly shown off to the viewing public expecting us to think on it as art. I feel insulted that they think I'll accept this as a positive step for the team.

Like I said on the Gagne thread, I don't care what they'd do with the money, hell turn it into management bonuses, but choosing Byrnes over Hairston makes my stomach curl and does nothing to make me think there's anything intelligent coming out of the FO.

I was thinking of a stock analogy while on my morning walk and this Byrnes/Hairston thing is like selling a stock with potential for below net book value and keeping a stock that is at 20 times earnings while most in it's sector are trading at 10 times earnings.

What makes a shit stain great?

I don't pin the jerking around of Hairston on the current regime. He was getting jerked around 2 or 3 years ago. The old team just wouldn't admit that Hairston couldn't play second base. They should have moved him to the OF much sooner.

And I can't hold it against the team when they've made way for so many other young players. They obviously have their priorities set and Hairston just wasn't at the top of the list. He was stuck behind a, cough, local institution. There really was no place for him to play. I have faith that they'll make it work for Hairston - whether that is here or someplace else.

Damn it.....there you go talking sense again.

Seriously, I appreciate being talked in off the ledge. Most likely Josh HAS been shopping Byrnes and just wishes we would all shut the hell up. Twisted Evil

The whole thing, along with what will likely happen to a few of our pitching prospects, seems like such bad baseball that the FO should be putting more effort into it.

We don't have the money to be major players in the FA market now or over the next 3 years. Ok, I'm totally cool with that but shouldn't we be then trying to get the most out of our current crops. Shouldn't a cash strapped team be thinking about $$/production and building the most trade value into what we have?

For the Hairston case, let's assume he plays acceptable D in left and smacks in 25HR next year, not a large stretch. What will he be worth next year in a trade? How much more will we get than this year?

In Nipperts case <or whomever else you'd like to see in the rotation at #4/5 vs a trade> what if he could pitch 180 innings this year with a 4.60 ERA next year, again not far fetched, how much more would he be worth than now?

I guess what I'm saying is what we have now could likely be of similar quality next year to what we are looking to trade true value for now. My guess is they'd trade Hairston & Nippert today for less than either will be worth next year.

I know, preaching to the choir.

I suspect that Byrnes and his staff are really willing to stand pat, and don't think they are going to give away the farm in any trades. However, if something comes along between now and April that will improve the team, they should still be willing to make some deals. The Diamondbacks have so many good prospects that its not just older guys blocking prospects but prospects blocking each other. If there are some areas where the team has exceptional depth and other area where more effective talent would be helpful ( such as in pitching ), why not make a trade. Sure the Diamondbacks will be giving up good players with potential, but theyr're not going to get anything good in return for nothing.

Staying with the stock market analogy, this is another way of saying, "It takes money to make money."

A trade that enhances the team? Yes; make it.

A trade for the sake of "doing something?" Absolutely not.

Spot on. Trade Byrnes; play Hairston. Doing the reverse is like taking a big stack of dollar bills (say, 4-5 million) outside onto the plaza and setting them on fire...
