The Detroit Tigers catcher Ivan Rodriguez was forced to play second base for the first time in his career after Placido Polanco separated a shoulder. Polanco was hurt making a grab on Doug Mirabelli's flare and will be out for the year.
Because Brandon Inge had already been used as a defensive replacement, Rodriguez had to move from catcher to second base, with Vance Wilson taking over behind the plate. Rodriguez had never played second base in 2,256 previous major and minor league games.
Rodriguez said he played second in Little League. "I've taken groundballs throughout the season, so if the team needs me, I'm ready."
And I doubt Counsell would make it through waivers w/o someone claiming him just to keep a team like Detroit from picking him up. AZ isn't likely to let him go on waivers and a claim would only force them to pull him back and keep them from trading him this season.
