I haven't heard that but the $ and years make sense. If anything they are low compared to what the shitty pitchers are getting lately. |

According to this article from Sports Illustrated this is nowhere near a done deal. Hendry disputes the dollar amount and Schmidt is going to require a 4th year.
It could happen, it looks like they are in somewhat serious negotiations, but he could still end up on any number of clubs. |

This is all that I have found on it. It did seem like a pretty good deal for the Cubs..the way ESPN reported it.

Update: Schmidt received a three-year, $44 million contract offer from the Cubs, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Recommendation: Schmidt reportedly told the Yankees that he does not want to play for a team on the east coast, while it will likely take one more year to get the deal done, as Schmidt is one of the more coveted arms available on the free-agent market. " |

An Internet report that the Cubs were offering San Francisco free-agent pitcher Jason Schmidt as much as $45 million for three years is unfounded, sources said Tuesday night.
The Cubs are not believed to have made a solid offer, certainly not at those figures.
The team, however, does have interest in the 33-year-old right-hander and has talked to his agents several times, knowing it might take more money to lure him to the Midwest from the West Coast.
The favorites in the Schmidt derby are the Dodgers, who have money to spend, and Seattle, which is near where Schmidt grew up. |
