My writers and I ranked Miguel Montero as the No. 2 rookie catcher entering 2006.

Hey Adam, thanks for coming by and introducing your site. Lots of prospect junkies here. I am sure you will get lots of hits from people here.....especially if you keep pimping Arizona prospects. We like that! |

Baseball prospectus ranks Catching Prospects.Link
They have Montero #3, but there is a big dropoff from 2 to 3. Here is their comment
Quote: |
Notice the huge drop-off in the scores; we’ve gone from two elite prospects to guys with a lot of asterisks pretty quickly. Miguel Montero is a known commodity who has done nothing but hit for the past two years, save for a brief stint at Tennessee in 2005. This is a very common profile for a decent catching prospect--average in just about everything but speed (none) and size (short for a contemporary ballplayer). PECOTA doesn’t see a ton of growth for Montero or necessarily a long career; like the scouts, it generally prefers players who have at least one Grade-A skill to work from. But being average-to-above throughout his arbitration years is going to be valuable. |
Even though my projections have Montero putting up better numbers than Snyder, if I were picking today for my fantasy draft, and I had to choose between Snyder and Montero, I would take Snyder.
Edit:
Just saw BP's correction, making Montero 4th, not 3rd

You should add that this isn't their official ranking, but rather the straight statistical PECOTA ranking. I think they said their official Top 100 list (compiled almost exclusively by Kevin Goldstein) will be put online sometime next week.
Silver's PECOTA rankings are very interesting, nonetheless.

I trust PECOTA a lot more when it has enough meaningful statistics on a player to run projections. Bryan Anderson? I mean, please...
He might be a good prospect in terms of talent and tools, but a stats-based projection system can tell me squat about him right now... |

Yes. I'm not sold on Montero, and Snyder is finally coming into his own. I think it's just bad timing for Montero, and Snyder will always be just a tad more developed. Can't ignore the minor league numbers and the age comps between them.
