Justin Morneau was named AL MVP on Tuesday after receiving 15 of the 28 first-place votes.
Ridiculous. Derek Jeter came in second with 12 first-place votes and 306 points.

W-w-what?!

You didn't believe me when I called this one yesterday (in the pre-season predictions thread)? Cool

morneau? he wasn't even the MVP of his own team. mauer had 31 WS to morneau's 27.

jeter should have won. yeeeech! i feel dirty just saying it.

Oh well, I'd rather have an undeserving young Twins 1B get it than an undeserving Jeter

I was hoping it would be either Morneau or Mauer. I think either are more deserving than Jeter.

i have thirty some tabs open already in my browser, so i'm not going to open another to check jeter's winshares, but i'm pretty sure he had m&m beat. i really wouldn't have minded him winning it this year.

and mauer winning it would have made sense. but i just don't see morneau.

FWIW, Jeter had 33 Win Shares (first in the AL, Mauer was second, Morneau was 5th, tied with Raul Ibanez!).

I think there was no clear winner in the AL, and that Morneau, Jeter and Mauer are all reasonable choices. I certainly don't see where picking Morneau is the travesty that Rotoworld seems to think it is. Rotoword seemed perfectly fine with Howard winning the NL MVP, but he finished 6th in Win Shares (31), eight behind the leader, Pujols.

2006 AL OPS

Mauer .936
Morneau .934
Jeter .900

And then there's also David Ortiz, 1.049 OPS, 29 win shares

Jeter is a shortstop. He may not be a very good one, but that still carry's more value than Morneau at first.

EQA
Jeter .309
Morneau .300

WARP1
Jeter 9.8
Morneau 7.3

It's not just win shares.

Picking Mauer over Jeter....defenseable. He had a .313 EQA and 8.9 WARP1

Picking Santana over Jeter would also be defenseable. 10.6 WARP1

Picking Morneau?????

Sorry.....it's a bad pick David...it really is. Compare him to Konerko.

i'm but a young whippersnapper, but i can't think of another MVP in my life going to a guy who wasn't even the best on his team. morneau is third on his own team, for crying out loud!

Thanks, Stu. The two most interesting things from the votes...I wonder what Jeter did to Ed Price of the Newark Star Ledger. You figure a top MVP candidate wins both his home writers (unless either familiarity breeds contempt, or contempt breeds contempt). And you really have to wonder what Jeter did to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun Times. Even I can't imagine putting Jeter 6th on a ballot.

Everyone keeps talking about how Morneau carried the Twins down the stretch, and single handedly kept their offense going when it mattered most.

Of course....this is a myth

Month by Month OPS for Morneau

April: .690

May : .838

June: 1.137

July : 1.130

August: .878

September: .884

Basically Morneau had two really hot months in the middle of the season, June July, and was NOT the beast everyone is trying to say down the stretch.

For August and September combined he had 6 homers and 42 RBI.

By comparison, Michael Cuddyer had 10 homers and 43 RBi during the same span.

Price used to write for the East Vally trib. He was a very good writer and knew baseball. I was sorry to see him go.

Price said he voted for Morneau because the Twins had a closer race and Morneau carried them down the stretch.

Not saying this is is right, so don't shoot the messenger.

Here are M's game logs.

From Sept 15 through the end of the season his average dropped 4 points. His OBP 14 points and his slugging 22 points. Even if you take a shorter period than a month, I don't see him carrying the Twins, but you can decide for yourself.

Maybe Price just saw the Boston game on the 19th. Anyway, does anything west of the Hudson matter?
