The Cubs would be out of their minds to give a player $135 million and an 8 year contract. No player should get that. That is stupid. I'm not even sure Jerry Colangelo would have sprung for this kind of contract. |

Yes to the former, and no to the latter. I think one of the mods should lock this since there is already a subject in the MLB section.

Once the Soriano deals goes down, Luis Gonzalez will be closer to signing his contract. |

AP and ESPN are running the same story

Burrell will look like a bargain if a team can get the Phillies to eat a chunk of his contract |

With Soriano gone the Philly's might be less anxious to trade him. |

Are you ever right. The other free agents have to be ectastic about the deal Soriano has gotten. It means many of them are going to be getting big money this offseason, too. |

When you called me on the phone and told me about this, I guessed he got 18 million per year, so i was only off by a million on the annual.....but no way did I imagine him getting 8 years. I figured 6 at the most.
It's the length of this contract that is going to kill the cubs. But then I guess if it were a 6 year deal he would have been getting 22 million a year, and then I would be saying the annual amount was crazy. |

soriano's not a bad player by any means, but i don't believe his 06 season is his new level of play -- not at all. a lot of his value this year came from him finally taking walks. look at his walk numbers, from 1999 to 2006:
0, 1, 29, 23, 38, 33, 33, 67
"one of these things / is not like the other!"
i see 45 as the over/under for walks next year in mr soriano's case. and i might even take the under.
good luck, cubs. you brought this on yourself.

This deal is symbolic of Cubs front office thinking, and now ensures that they will NOT win a World Series for over 100 years since their last one.

the most amazing thing about this deal, IMO, is that the cubs signed another 2bman! sure, soriano played lf last year, but he's still mostly 2b at heart. and that goes well with womack, walker, theriot (?), hairston, bynum, cedeno, and perez (i prefer to think of him staying on the cubs, instead of going to my beloved tigers).
it's like they're trying to build an entire major league team of 2bmen.

This deal will be at its best when Soriano loses his speed. Sure, he may be like Dave Roberts and keep the ability to steal 30+ bases per season into his mid 30's but if not he will be another shitty fielding LF that doesn't hit for average and doesn't walk that much. Oh, and he strikes out a lot also. |

So, Matt - You're saying that Soriano is basically "The Return of Dave Kingman"? |

lol Counsell, it could happen, especially at the end of his contract.
When I heard they wanted Beltran money I thought they meant in a rhetorical way. I didn't think they would really get it. This could rival the ARod deal for Texas (not NYY) in stupidity. Fuck, at least Beltran can play a premium defensive position.
Soriano has a career OPS of .835 and a career high of .911 (2006). The Cubs better hope he can keep that up because his career average is pretty fucking average for a LF.
So here is a summary of the Cubs this offseason:
Henry Blanco, C, 2, $5.25
Mark DeRosa, 2B, 3, $13
Wade Miller, SP, 1, $1.5
Aramis Ramirez, 3B, 5, $75
Kerry Wood, RP (based on incentives), 1, $1.75
Alfonso Soriano, LF, 8, $136
Aside from SBs, what is so much better about Soriano than Ramirez? Ramirez has the same power, hits for much better average, walks the same, K's less, and plays a better defensive position. Are the SBs (which likely won't be there for Soriano in 2012 (he will be 35) when Ramirez's contract is up worth an extra 3 years and $2M/yr ($61M total)? We don't know how the contracts are structured yet but they will pay an average of $32M to two non-pithcers for the next 5 years. |

Lev's right that to get accurate comps you have to look at players with comparable talent. Regardless, the market is upwardly affected at least to some degree when a player receives a contract that is far beyond what has been the norm.
Barry Svrluga / The Washington Post wrote: |
The contract Soriano agreed to yesterday -- an eight-year, $136 million deal with the Chicago Cubs -- sent waves through baseball and established Soriano as the first beneficiary of an industry that finds itself flush with cash this offseason, and likely also drove up the price for other free agents. Two weeks before baseball's winter meetings begin, the spending has started.
To put Soriano's contract in historical perspective, only four deals have offered more total compensation: Alex Rodriguez's $252 million for 10 years with Texas, Derek Jeter's $189 million for 10 years with the New York Yankees, Manny Ramirez's $160 million for eight years with Boston and Todd Helton's $141.5 million for 11 years with Colorado. It exceeds -- by one year and $17 million -- the benchmark deal outfielder Carlos Beltran received from the New York Mets two offseasons ago. Soriano will be 39 when the contract expires.
The impact on the market, however, could be significant, and the immediate beneficiary could be Texas outfielder Carlos Lee. Soriano and Lee, who hit 37 homers and drove in 116 runs in splitting time between the Rangers and Milwaukee, are widely considered to be the hitters that could have the biggest impact on a new team. Teams that were pursuing Soriano -- including Houston and Philadelphia -- could now focus on Lee, who is likely to benefit from Soriano's staggering contract.
Speculation among major league executives last night was that Lee might command as much as $95 million. |

I read on the Cubs' mlb board that the last two years are options. Can anyone confirm this? If so it makes the deal a lot better but its still quite loopy.

The new Ramírez contract has a player option for 2011 at $14.6 million and a mutual option for 2012 with a buyout of $2 million, but no word yet on whether the Cubs followed that same option model for Soriano.
