Mets acquired outfielder Ben Johnson and RHP Jon Adkins from the Padres for RHP Heath Bell and LHP Royce Ring.
A trade of a bunch of guys who have been around for a long time but have yet to really establish themselves in the majors. The Padres get two more pieces for their pen, while the Mets don't surrender anyone they valued highly at all. From the way each was treated last year, it was clear the team didn't see Bell and Ring as anything more than 12th pitchers going forward. Johnson, 25, deserves a real shot as a fourth outfielder. He's hit .236/.324/.441 in 195 at-bats with the Padres the last two years. Getting out of Petco will help him hit for average. If Endy Chavez can keep playing at his 2006 level -- something that's admittedly pretty unlikely -- Johnson would be a fine platoonmate for him. The Mets, though, will likely keep shopping for a regular.
