wanted to say hi to everyone and say "wow" this board looks like the yankees board on the espn message boards where I used to do my frequent reading of team news. Needless to say this is the board I will be coming to to discuss my 2008,2009,2010, 2011 World Series Champion Arizona Diamondbacks Just wanted to say hi to everyone and I can't wait to see what unfolds this offseason after celebrating our ace winning the Cy Young, it could not have happened to a better guy. My first question to everyone is this, is Webb under contract through 2010? It said on the ESPN article that his buyout increased from 500k to 1 million in 2010 because he won the Cy Young, lol, I dont think there will be any buying out of that contract. A man who makes 2.5 million wins the Cy Young is amazing. I wonder what the lowest amount a pitcher has made when they won the Cy Young. Could be Brandon. From what I see though is that we have him under contract for for the next 4 seasons, with him becoming available for free agency in 2011. Can anyone confirm or deny that? If that is indeed the case, then we have a Cy Young winner under contract for 4 more seasons at an average of 5 million a year, congrats to upper management for making this happen, they appear to be geniuses now Hope everyone has an enjoyable evening.

Welcome aboard, consciousq.
In answer to one of your questions, Brandon isn't even close to being the lowest paid Cy Young winner. Remember, there were Cy Young winners long before salaries sky-rocketed with the advent of free-agency in the '70s.
Don Newcombe won the Cy Young Award in 1956, when there was only one award for both leagues combined. In 1957, Don earned just $30,000 salary. Like I said, Webb ain't even close to being the lowest paid CY Winner.

Warren Spahn won it in 1957 on a $57,000 salary.
Whitey Ford won it in 1961 on a $35,000 salary.
Not to put words in his mouth, I think he was getting at salary relative to the rest of the league.

Welcome consciousq!
Assuming you're looking for recent salaries, Chris Carpenter last year was earning less than Webb, only $2m. Johan Santana made $1.6m in 2004, and Eric Gagne only $550K in 2003.

yes I was referring to recent era salaries Thank you for the old time stats though, that was informative as well. I thank the rest of you as well for the great links and information. This board is amazing, can't wait to discuss some more baseball in the future. Oh and my guess is the DBacks will be picking up Webb's 8.5 million option in 2010, but what I bet they do is sign him to a longer extension before that even comes to pass if is still pitching like he is now. Night everyone

That's clearly not what consciousq asked, but we can explore from that angle as well.
The average major league salary in 1957 was $15,083. Don Newcombe earned $14,917 more than league average ($30,000).
The average major league player in 2006 earned $2,866,544. Webb earned $2,950,000 in 2006 ($2.5M salary + $450K incentive for exceeding 220 IP), which is $83,456 more than league average.
In addition, AZSnakepit just posted numbers demonstrating that the last 3 CY winners all made substantially less $$$ than Webb has this year.
Any way you slice it, Webb isn't close to being the lowest paid CY winner.
