I'm just wondering what you guys think of these trades.
Dontrelle Willis is a little over-rated and I'm wondering if these guys would fit into our system.
Brandon Webb (NL Cy Young!!!) and Livan Hernandez are the only two locks. I thought these two guys would give us a pretty cool options.
Diamondbacks Get: Ervin Santana
Angels Get: Chris Carter, Johnny Estrada, Brian Barden
Chris Carter would thrive in the AL and Angels are looking for a young power-bat. Johnny Estrada gets to stay in the West coast, replacing dissapointing Napoli and Mathis. Brian Barden would give them another bat who could possibly start because they do not have a pure 3rd baseman after Chone Figgins moved to center. For the Diamondbacks, they get a solid young righty who could supplement Webb for the next decade. Angels were said to be danggling this kid for a right deal.
OR
Diamondbacks Get: Mark Buehrle or Freddy Garcia
White Sox Get: Scott Hairston, Alberto Callaspo
White Sox wants to trade one of these starters away and I've heard that any of these 5 are available for a trade this off-season. Buehrle and Garcia are actually both proven veterans who just had a rough year in 2006. They are still young and could mean alot to the National League team such as the Arizona Diamondbacks. Scott Hairston could definitely start for the White Sox as they are looking to trade Scott Podsednick and Brian Anderson (whom they chose to keep over Chris Young) was a huge dissapointment. Alberto Callaspo could start right away, also, for Juan Uribe.
If we sign Mark Mulder to a 2 year, incentive-laden deal, it would solidify this rotation to become one of the best in the National League with Webb-Mulder-Hernandez-Santana (Buehrle or Garcia)-Owings. How about that?

On the Angels trade, if you can get them to agree to give up Santana for that package, you will need to be put to work solving the middle east next.
On the trade with the white sox, both Hairston and Callaspo together would be an overpay for either Buehrle or Garcia. But forget about Buehrle anyway, he is done. Freddy might still have something. His stuff is still good, and his new sinker was devastating in September. It's a new pitch for him, or he is throwing it a new way more likely, and he would be pretty dominant his first year in the NL.
If I felt this team was one more pitcher away, I'd like Freddy.....but his cost for just one season before he becomes a Free Agent after 2007 is just too high.
Pass. |

no way i give up callaspo and hairston (or even callaspo alone) for garcia.
why would you give up anyone cheap and good and under control for more than a year for freddy garcia? |

I didn't look for a link but according to Gambo, the team is in contract discussions with Randy Wolf. He cited some multi-year deal around 5-6M/yr. |

There are a number of articles online citing AZ as a potential destination for Wolf.

I think the 5-6 million is what shoe is referring to as a "Disaster." Thats an awful lot of money for a relief pitcher, especially for the position we are in (about $10 million or so to spend, in dire need of starting pitching) |

Wolf is a starter
I don't have confidence in him to make it all the way back
too much money for the risk. |

you don't have confidence in him to make it all the way back from a tj surgery? the guy had his elbow rebuilt, not his shoulder. the track record of tj survivors coming back is excellent... and wolf is already back, he pitched for the phillies and showed he's recovered. he'll only be better next year.
wolf was an excellent starter before his elbow problems began in 2004. in fact, he should've had the tj surgery a year earlier than he did. he would've cashed in big time this offseason
i absolutely have no problem with signing wolf. and if we can get him for 3 years at $5-6m/year, then he'll be a real bargain. heck, el duque got $6m per year, and he doesn't have nearly the upside of randy wolf.
wolf's comps, fwiw, are rather interesting

Thats still too much money for someone with so many question marks. We have a better shot with Mulder imo. |

yeah, Shawn Estes at #2 is quite reassuring.
Dude, not every TJ "survivor" comes back to be as good or better than they were, and Wolf only had two really good seasons, and he was NEVER excellent. Trust me, I know....I owned him in roto like 3 years running. Even during his good years, he was crazy streaky, and just not dependable.
If you think you are going to get 180+ innings at 110 ERA+ or something like that, I think you are being WAY too optimisitic.
But if Byrnes is going to sign him, he must see the same things you are, so I am more than happy to be proven wrong.
but I won't be

I thought it was crazy also until I checked his stats. Better than what I thought (although his declining K rate is alarming). If he can be about league average it's a good deal. |

I guess he is healthy enough.....for now.
He is also a flyball pitcher. His career GB/FB ratio is 0.87 |

He's healthy... for now?! huh?
As I said, the track record of TI survivors is excellent. Wolf made it back and looks completely healthy.
You think he'll need a second TJ surgery?

pass-a-dena...he's deceptive but not 1 plus pitch. go after Jason Johnson first, at least he has a plus pitch. Estes is probably just as good of an option. If its a loogy we desire. Bring back the Admiral, Beane's probably tired of him.

And speaking of Arizona's 2007 pitching rotation...
KOVA Tucson this afternoon wrote: |
PHOENIX -- As soon as the Arizona Diamondbacks learned that Brandon Webb had won the Cy Young Award, general partner Jeff Moorad called Josh Byrnes, who was attending major-league general manager meetings in Florida.
Byrnes was about to sit down with the representative of a free-agent pitcher whom Moorad didn't identify. And Byrnes planned to tell the agent that Arizona pitchers have won the Cy Young Award five times in nine years, with former Diamondback Randy Johnson winning four straight from 1999-2002.
"(Byrnes) said, 'I just learned how to start my discussion,' " Moorad said Wednesday as he recounted the conversation. "That's not a bad sell."
Now that the Diamondbacks have a Cy Young Award winner at the front of their starting rotation, they're looking to beef up the rotation behind him.
Moorad confirmed that the club had put in an offer of less than $20 million for the negotiating rights to Japan League ace Daisuke Matsuzaka but weren't close to beating out the Boston Red Sox, who won the rights with a $51 million bid.
"We made a significant post, but we're not about to compete with $51 million," Moorad said.
The Diamondbacks have been mentioned as possible suitors for free-agent pitchers Mark Mulder and Randy Wolf, but the club may decide to acquire pitching through trades.
"Trades are probably more likely than free-agent signings, but I think it's fair to say we have our ear to the ground on both," Moorad said. "I'm optimistic about something happening in the next week." |

Jules : "You're bringin' in the Wolf?"
I'm hesitant to believe the Wolf story. In the Bynres tenure, trades and acquisitions have been TOP SECRET with no leaks, (minus the Shawn Green deal which is the exception to prove the rule.) Why would the DBacks depart from the previous standard unless they are disseminating disinformation? |

Because at the GM meetings, it's impossible to talk to anyone and not be noticed by 15 reporters. It's not like Byrnes is hiding in Fort Knox

Thank you for pointing out my ignorance of the GM meetings. So it sounds like The Wolf will be donning the Red and Sand.
