Gary Sheffield-OF- Yankees Nov. 10 - 3:41 pm et
According to SI.com, the Tigers have acquired Gary Sheffield from the Yankees for Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett.
The Yankees did well if true. Sanchez's late-season elbow troubles were a concern, but he still ranks among the top dozen pitching prospects in baseball, and Whelan and Claggett are both quality relief prospects. The Tigers would have been smarter to sign one of the big free agent bats than to give up three quality arms for one year of a 38-year-old coming off a major injury. Throw in the attitude problems and the steroid allegations and he might be more trouble than he's worth.

Confirmed.

Gary Sheffield-OF- Tigers Nov. 10 - 4:10 pm et
Tigers acquired outfielder Gary Sheffield from the Yankees for RHP Humberto Sanchez, RHP Kevin Whelan and RHP Anthony Claggett.
The Tigers didn't immediately confirm that Sheffield had signed a two-year extension, but that could come soon. Sheffield would best fit as the Tigers' DH and maybe a part-time right fielder when Magglio Ordonez needs a break. It's possible that he'll see some time at first base, but the Tigers should look elsewhere there. If he's healthy, he'll probably be Detroit's best hitter next season. However, he turns 38 this month and he could continue to battle injuries, especially if he sees considerable time in the field. The club should have gone the free agency route, if not for Alfonso Soriano then maybe for J.D. Drew. |
Don't know whether to be happy or sad for you, McCray...

Tigers also gave Sheffield a two !!! year extension, covering 2008 and 2009

I personally think the Tigers gave up too much; heck, Sanchez alone would've been plenty. But Detroit is in a win-now mode, so they're overpaying
At least now we know they won't be trading Bonderman for a big bat |

Wow, the Yankees are trading a Proven Veteran (PV) for prospects. What's this world coming to? |

this is NOT a bad deal for detroit. it's actually pretty good. they gave up a guy who's only had one good season in the minors in sanchez, is injury prone, and is overweight, as well as two guys who MAY one day have careers as relievers in the majors. that's NOT that much.
the bigger concern is how much cash the tigers gave to sheffield in the extension, but it's just money anyhow...

i've seen sanchez pitch. he's got GREAT stuff. i was really high on the guy. granted, detroit has pitchers coming out the ears, but this is NOT a good deal, not remotely.
sure, they needed offense, but gary mfing sheffield?! if dmitri young really got canned for drinking (according to the rumors i've heard, at least), then what the fuck is roid boy doing?
and EXTENDING him?!
one of my proudest achievements in being a baseball fan was the fact that, despite gary sheffield having a hell of a career, and despite how many teams he's played for, i have NEVER found myself rooting for him.
goddamn you, dombrowski. damn you to hell!
i stand by my initial reaction. this is a "FUCK" kind of deal.

I still have a Dick Allen autographed (engraved) bat from Bat Day at the old Comiskey Park in 1973. Can you imagine them handing out 14,000 bats to fans in South Chicago today?

This is what I posted at Primer:
This is all about 2007 for the Tigers and nothing but. Their attendance went all the way up to 2.6 Million in 2006, and I am sure they will see a big bump in season ticket and single game sales to start out the season. 3 million is a real possibility for Detroit in 2007. If they actually get back to the World Series in 2007, they will blow WAY past 3 million a year easily in 2008.
Their payroll was 82 million, or 14th in the league. With the added revenues they stand to receive if they get back to the W.S., this is not quite as bad a financial risk for them as it may appear at first glance. If they get one great or very good year out of Sheffield, it will pay for two less productive years down the road.
I am NOT arguing this is the best allocation of resources....I'll let the smarter folk work that out. I'm just saying they can afford it, and it's possible it could payoff |
