Poor MG. I know levski posted this in the other thread, but I thought it deserved a thread of it's own.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch says Luis Gonzalez is leaning heavily toward signing a one-year deal with the Cardinals, possibly as soon as next week.
Some have speculated that Gonzalez would prefer to stay in the NL West with the Giants or Dodgers, allowing him to punish the Diamondbacks for letting him go. If the Cardinals made him their left fielder, there wouldn't be any room left for Chris Duncan, who was only the club's second best hitter once he got his chance last season. They would likely consider trading Juan Encarnacion, but it's doubtful there'd be a lot of interest. |
I'd be pretty bummed out, I was hoping he would end up in the NL West.

I thought the maximum reduction from previous year salary if it went to arbitration was 20% Wouldn't he be guaranteed 8 million that way?

IF he accepts arbitration, shoewiz. There should be enough interest in him to make the gamble worthwhile...
And, as I wrote in the other thread, the Dbacks can tell him that he can come back but he'll be a platoon guy...

The 20% max reduction applies only when the arbitration is mandatory for the player. That is basically the 3-6 year arb. |

What was the deal with Maddux a few years back with the Braves?
Didn't he accept arbitration unexpectedly one year and it ended up costing the braves alot more than they were budgeting to spend. |

yes, maddux accepted. there's really no chance that gonzo accepts. especially since he's bound to make more as a free agent than he would via arbitration in az...
and, what stu said |

i actually asked this question on the mlb board a week or so ago. they all thought i was an idiot for wanting to offer him arb.
so, if the 80% rule is out the window, what's the worst that could happen? gonzo comes back for another year at price under 8M, but how far under? do we trade byrnes in that situation? and how does the PR play out -- after the sentimental goodbye, and all?

Maddux actually got a raise the season he was a free agent. He signed without going through arbitration so a cut was not at issue. Coming off a 17-11 233 ip 3.05 year he was worth the one year about 14M he signed for.

There was no question of him taking a cut. It surprised the Braves because they thought he would want a multi year deal and hadn't planned on him accepting. |

My friends from St. Louis are ecsatic about the possibility of Gonzo in LF next year.
I'm surprised he'd really consider going there since he's said all along that he wants to stay in the NL West. IMO I think for the sake of his family he'd be better off closer but maybe that's just me. If he hasn't received any real consideration from anyone in the NL West, I guess he'll go wherever he has to go. |

That alone should clue you in that you are making sense. You should only worry when the rest of that shit hole agrees with you.

No Gonzo to the Cardinals talk in today's St. Louis Post-Dispatch, but nothing to rule it out. Cards main concern will be pitching since only Carpenter and Anthony Reyes are certain to return as starters (they plan to keep Wainwright in closer role to start the season).
Article does talk about how the Cards want another power bat to put at either 2nd base or a corner OF spot (mentioning Soriano), but given their past history of not shelling out exorbitant FA money... they may go with a much cheaper Gonzo, and TLR would be certain to use the mix & match method to make sure Gonzo would rare see a lefty pitcher.
Gonzo may not get a deal from anyone that really suits him, but if he thinks he can get plenty of playing time with the Cards he may well sign there. Sounds like he was really impressed with the way the fans take to their club when he was covering the playoffs..
They do love their team and support everyone that plays hard. If Gonzo does go there, they WILL give him lots of appreciation BUT they can also turn on him if they sense that he is lollygagging it in the OF and isn't productive. Hell... they began booing Isringhausen really loudly this season as soon as TLR called him in from the pen. |

Also, if Gonzo signs with the Cardinals before the arbitration deadline, we automatically offer him arbitration because he cannot accept and we get the 18th pick in the draft plus a sandwich pick. Please sign next week, Gonzo!!! |

Yeah, I would think the only time they might do thatis if the FAis so sort after that waiting would risk losing that player, and losing that player would be much worse than losing that draft pick.
Gonzo does not meet these conditions. |

I don't think the team has to worry about Gonzo accepting arbetration. Go ahead and offer it to him. |
