Hey, he was learning Chase Field, the NL, etc.! I think he'll be better on both O & D in 2007.
Congrats O-Dawg!!!
I *heart* Josh Byrnes.

Yeah, how much is this gonna cost us? Said it before and I'll say it again, any GM looking to shore up the middle infield could certainly sell a Gold Glover with a .290 BA to the fans. And not get reamed for giving up prospects that 99% of the fan base has never heard of.

Hudson also won the Gold Glove award from a panel of 10 stathead "experts" on fielding. they don't tell you who they are.

John Dewan wrote "The Fielding Bible", as the site says.
FWIW, I completely agree on the gold glovers for the remaining positions; therefore, I will also agree that Hudson indeed was the best defensive 2bman in the game this year.
Watch Robert have a heart attack

At the start of the season I do not think Hudson was playing Gold Glove defense and was lightly above aberage IMO. He improved as the season went on, but on some sort of overall standard I would not have thought Gold Glove. Sort of like I could not see Trevor Bobick as the Champ on an absolute scale.
However, the GG is not on an absolute scale, but a comparison with other players.
Here are Dial's numbers on NL 2b's They are given not for theri validity (which I doubt) but just for listing of 2b's with some number next to them. There really isn't that much competition. Philly fans thought Utely was great this year, but I hadn't heard that when he was coming up. I always like Valentine's range at ss, but he only played 94 games at 2b. Jamie Carrol lost his job. Biggiio is old. Barfield and Phillips young. Given the competition, the coaches probably made a logical choice.
As to Dewan experts (and I'm guessing Dial was not one), I wonder how many games they saw Hudson play. I should also point out that the Dewan award is all of the majors not just the NL so it is even more impressive. |
