It's amazing to me in this day and age, that a guy like Carlos Lee is on the verge of getting 5 years, 75 million or something stupid like that.
He has a career 113 OPS+ and is 30 years old. He has only had two seasons over 120 OPS+, (2006 & 2004)
His career RC/27 is 5.99, and he has never been over 7 (he was exactly 7 in 2004)
His top 3 comps through age 30 are
George Bell (out of baseball by age 33)
Kent Hrbek (out of baseball by age 34)
Raul Mondesi (out of baseball by age 34)
Dial had him at -3 in LF by the end of August....I don't know where he ranked in the end.
His 47.2 VORP ranks 38th in the majors.
BP had him at only 4.7 WARP1
Yet, SOME team is going to look at his friggin RBI totals and WAY overpay him.
Amazing. Simply amazing. |

At least we can be thankful that it won't be the Diamondbacks. |

Under the old regime, you just know that he would be considered a replacement for Gonzo....
check that...under the old regime, Gonzo would have been given a 3 yr. extension for hitting 50 doubles and Quentin would have been traded for Jason Marquis because he is a proven winner. |

Maybe by next year, the DBBP can add a podcasting capability.
The scenario above would have been an excellent script idea for the baseball equivalent of Orson Welles' Mercury Theater "War of the Worlds" broadcast on Hallowe'en...

Burrell's 117 career OPS+ doesn't look so bad right now, does it?
Not to mention the Phillies will kick in enough cash to make him "cheap".

check out gonzo's projections:

here's hoping he signs with san francisco
