Some highlights...

Although San Francisco’s conversation was characterized as “general,” the Giants’ interest is the most intriguing and could indicate a fundamental shift in organizational thinking under new manager Bruce Bochy.
Giants management has expressed what can be described as only lukewarm interest in resigning left fielder Barry Bonds, who is 22 home runs short of passing Hank Aaron for the major league record and also filed for free agency Saturday.
San Francisco’s contact could indicate a willingness to go in another direction, since Gonzalez’s best position also is left field.
Texas, which recently fired manager Buck Showalter and has not hired a replacement, appears to be interested in Gonzalez not only as a left fielder and designated hitter but also as a clubhouse stabilizer. |

IMO, SF is using "interest" in Gonzalez as plan-B should any other team surprise them and outbid their planned lowball offer to Bonds.
If Texas is planning to use Gonzalez as a "clubhouse stabilizer," they'd better 1)never sit him out without his permission, and 2)never mention any developing outfield prospects.

I've mentioned several times that if Bonds is not resigned, SFO is a possible destination.
I hope so. |

He could sure hit a lot of doubles in either park. I kind of hopes he goes to an American League team and we don't have to suffer another video tribute on the jumbo-tron a la Steve Finley. |

I'd take the orange & black Gonzo tributes in exchange for all the extra base hits that the Dbacks would get off the Giants. |

Gonzo and Chief Wahoo?
Luis Gonzalez reportedly has drawn interest from the Cleveland Indians, who met with Gonzalez and agent Gregg Clifton on Friday.
Clifton said the interview with general manager Mark Shapiro went well, telling The Plain Dealer, "I think it was very positive. Luis was impressed with Mark, and I think Mark was impressed with Luis.

This would fulfill Luis' stated desire to stick it to the Diamondbacks since Cleveland plays Arizona a whopping zero times in 2007. Maybe interest isn't quite as overwhelming as initially hoped? |

huh, cleveland is showing interest in counsell, too. also as per the cleveland plain dealer:
"The Indians are looking at free agent Craig Counsell, but probably as a utilityman rather than a regular second baseman.
There are going to be a lot of teams interested in signing Counsell as a part-time player. He may wait and see whether he can find a starting job once some of the better free-agent infielders are off the market."

what, were they not watching our 2006 season? didn't they see how asstastic the team was? why are they picking up our old guys?

Cleveland is picking up where SF left off, going all veterans all the time.
Paul Hoynes / Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote: |
General Manager Mark Shapiro, in his search of a veteran hitter, had lunch Friday afternoon with outfielder Luis Gonzalez and his agent, Gregg Clifton, in Phoenix.
The Indians need a second baseman, closer and a couple of setup men. Shapiro also wants a veteran hitter, who can help out at a corner outfield position or first base.
Moises Alou is another veteran hitter the Indians like. They have been linked to a rumored trade for Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield. |
