It's the equivalent of the line in Dumb & Dumber, "Bet you $20 I can get you gambling before the end of the day."

I think that Edgar is a lock, barring any other pitching acquisitions.

tough pol...catching up...
Enrique, best athelete on staff. Best slider, great control, pinpoint at 90-92. betcha 20 dollars he had a dead arm from jun or jul on? No difference between him and Anibal Sanchez stuff wise.

Edgar-looks like he's going to be a pitcher, guy to root for. his ball has good movement, and he showed up ready to go, and pitch last year. Obviously wants to master his craft.

Eveland, nasty, nasty, slider. good change, almost plus. doesn't locate his 90-92 fastball. Fat ass. Probably has to mature. Dominates the minors because of his of his change and slider and he's just better than them. At this level, guys are just as good as him. Will he lose the weight? Is he soft and rolls over when he gets hit or not get the call?

Juan C. tremendous ability, decent competitor. Doesn't look like he works well with his battery mates. Best fastball on staff.

I voted for Nippert for this reason: If he gets 25 starts, he's put it all together and has the highest upside. Close to John Patterson results.

But realistically, right now, Edgar should be the guy to have a full-time spot in the rotation.

I voted for Eve,and because he has the most upside at this point. If he is in the rotation, then he has shown something.

I voted Edgar for two reasons

I think he is as good a bet as any of them to approach 95 or better ERA+ for 150 innings or so, AND because he is out of options, whereas the other guys are not, so we would not be "wasting" anybody by using Edgar.

I was torn between Edgar and Cruz but since Juan had no support yet, I had to represent.

I'm not sure about how serious his injuries were last year, but if he's totally healthy I think our pitching inning strength would allow us to use him quite nicely.

I am reluctantly deferring to management on this one. They must have a reason not be seriously considering him for a spot in the rotation. It's probably concern over the shoulder.

Right now, I think Cruz is much better to serve us in long relief. He doesn't have the stamina/pitch management to start every 5th game and take you deep into it.

I voted for Eveland, because, as someone else pointed out, he has the most upside and if he is starting he showed something good. If he can get in better shape and locate his pitches better, he could be great.

I do think that Edgar is a lock right now. If we make a trade for a starter, he is our number 5. Otherwise he is our 4. This is why I voted otherwise.

Cruz's track record suggests he just doesn't have it to be a starter, but everybody tries it given the stuff he possesses. If he has the stuff to be a starter, but doesn't have the endurance or consistency, that screams middle relief to me.

Simple question: Would you rather have a starter with limited endurance, or a middle relief guy with electric stuff capable of pitching multiple short outings per week?

I say put players in position to produce their highest quality work.

I honestly think that if Cruz had better control of his stuff, and would use his brain just a tad more, and pitch to contact once in while instead of trying to strike everyone out, he would be more efficient, and be able to pitch deeper into games.

Looking at his game logs he had plenty of starts where he threw 95-110 pitches...unfortunately only a few where he went 7 innings.

There might be a tradeoff for that increased control - drop in velocity, fewer breaking pitches, etc - that might not allow him to be as effective. Seems the endurance is ok, but no control. And in that instance, he couldn't pitch to contact if he wanted to.

Maybe we just stick him in the rotation, let him do his damage, get lit up once in a while, shut 'em down once in a while, and save the $ for next yr? I'd rather have extra cash for somebody than an iffy Mulder that isn't going to do shit for two years.
