A question for those of you more familiar with the transition than I am (which admittedly doesn't take much)--why is it that when a minor league manager gets the call to the bigs it's usually as a third base coach?
I see that the Cubs just made their AAA manager their new 3B coach, we're expected to do the same with Hale, Pedrique came up originally as a 3B coach, and I'm sure if I thought about it, I could come up with several more. But I can't think of any instance in which a minor league manager debuted in the bigs at any other coaching position. I'm sure it's happened, and I just don't know about it, but AAA>3B seems much more common. Why?
Initial thoughts:
1) 3B is a higher-ranking position than other coaches (bench coach not included) because of the closer interaction with on-field players while at bat or on base.
2) Teams usually want bench coaches to have prior ML coaching experience; But why would a team would prefer ML experience (many bench coaches have no managing experience) over minor league managing experience?
