A future Tiger?
Craig Counsell was at the World Series with Jim Leyland again -- just not as a member of his team. He was on hand to speak as a player representative at the announcement of the new collective bargaining agreement.
Counsell, who started at second base for Leyland's 1997 Marlins, was a key component that Dave Dombrowski acquired before the trade deadline that year. Counsell, 36, has carried a winning reputation throughout his career and was a valuable player for the champion Diamondbacks in 2001.
This might not be the last time you see his name on these pages. The Tigers wanted to acquire him -- ahead of Perez -- when Placido Polanco was lost to injury but were unable to do so because of the waiver process. They could make another run this off-season now that he's a free agent.
One scenario: Counsell, who hit .255 with four homers and 30 RBIs with Arizona, could be the starting shortstop, and Carlos Guillen could make a permanent move to first base. |

Counsell as the starting SS over Guillen would be pretty crazy IMO... in other words:
Counsell + Guillen < Guillen + first Base replacement, right???
I would understand if CC would be utility though... |

Well, the Tigers can't be too stupid. They're in the World Series, right?
This once again highlights the value of Counsell beyond his stats. There are not many players like him.
I suspect this will bring yelps of protest, but if Leyland and the Tigers want him that speaks volumes louder than posters on a message board.
If he was a few years younger there's no way I'd let him go. |

If he was a few years younger, the Diamondbacks probably wouldn't have let him go...
...unless they had Drew at SS, Hudson at 2B, and Callaspo ready to be the next Craig Counsell-style super-utility player (with, hopefully, a more potent bat)...
Best of luck, Craig, in your new location.

The Tiger's arent the ones suggesting the move of Guillen to 1B and Counsell at SS full time, the columnist of the DFP is, and yes, he can be stupid.
The Tiger's showed where they placed Counsell when they tried to get him over Neifi as a backup MIF, which is where Counsell can excell. I can't imagine many yelps of protest about that, but if you wanna make that stance....
What exactly do you mean by saying there aren't a lot of players like Counsell?

I mean there aren't a lot of players whose value to the team is not entirely represented by their stats. I do believe, of course, that a player's value to his team is almost always measured accurately in stats, but I think there are a few players whose stats don't tell the entire story.
And yes, Shoe, I do understand that we'd be holding on to him if he were younger. I was stating the obvious, so your statement was obvious squared. |

I'm the short, rotund one... but I have more hair on my head (and face) than DeVito...
