Jamie Moyer will be 44 when the 2007 season starts, but the Phillies are banking that he has two more strong seasons remaining in his left arm.

Philadelphia signed Moyer to a two-year, $10.5 million extension Monday.

Moyer, who was acquired from the Mariners during the 2006 season, went 5-2 with a 4.03 ERA in eight starts for the Phillies and was 4-1 in September when the team made a failed push for the NL wild card.

"Jamie was one of our more effective pitchers down the stretch," Phillies general manager Pat Gillick said. "He was an asset to our ballclub not just for his performance on the field, but also for his presence in the clubhouse."

Overall in 2006, Moyer was 11-14 with a 4.30 ERA in 33 starts with Seattle and Philadelphia. He pitched at least 200 innings for the sixth straight season and eighth in the past nine years.

Moyer, who made $5.5 million this season, is a two-time 20-game winner (2001-03) and went to one All-Star Game (2003). He has a career record of 216-166 with a 4.17 ERA that includes stints with five other teams.

Among active pitchers, Moyer ranks seventh in wins, fifth in starts (518) and innings (3,351) and 10th in strikeouts (1,992).

Wow, Moyer has been good for a long time, and did really well for them down the stretch, but signing a 44 yr old to a 2 year deal seems awful risky. I wonder what he would have gotten if he was.....say.....Miguel Batista's age??

This doesn't impact Zito at all....they are in different universes.

What impacted Zito was the deals that Roy Halladay and Roy Oswalt got.

First Halladay, who was signed for 10.5 million in 2007, got a 3 yr extension thru 2010 that totals 40 million, or 13.3 million a yr.

Then Oswalt got 5 yrs, 73 million, full No Trade Clause, club option on 6th yr for 16 million or 2 million buyout, so effectively 5/75

These are the deals that impact Zito, and what Guarantee him getting 5 yrs 75 million from one of the California or New York teams.

What pitchers other than Nolan Ryan and Jim Kaat have had any level of success at ages 44 & 45?

Knucleballers come to mind (Phil Neikro and Hoyt Wilhelm). Tommy John was still reasonably effective at 44 and 45 (of course, John's left arm was cosiderably younger than his age). And Roger Clemens turned 44 in August last season and still was pitching well.

Roger turned 44 two months ago. HGH is advertized as the fountain of youth and this is one (alleged) great example. Wink

So among non knuckleballers we have John & Ryan & Clemens, in the last 30+ years...and thats about it.

If anyone can beat the odds, it will be Moyer, the guy has been beating the odds a long time now, and is in good shape, and of course his slow/slower/slowest style of pitching lends itself to longevity.
I root for him, and hope he does well. The ultimate underog. It is fun to watch him frustrate hitters. But in a market context, still....all I can say is WOW.

Moyer is truly one of the good ones in the game. In Seattle he was heavily involved in local charitable endeavors (through his Moyer Foundation). It's hard not to root for a guy like that.

Moyer trivia: His father in law is ex-Notre Dame coach Digger Phelps.

My brother is a big Mariners fan and has told me a number of positive things about Moyer--a game related one being about how dedicated he is to studying opposing batters and preparing for them (Schilling-like without as much computer usage)
