All I've heard so far from ESPN news is that a small plane crashed into a 50 ft. tall building in NYC (upper east side around 72nd St.), and that Lidle is confirmed dead.

Apparently he was piloting the plane that crashed into a highrise in NYC.

First, sad day for any baseball fan, sports fan, father, wife, etc. You have to feel for the family, friends, and the Yankees organization.

Second, how does something like this happen?

My thoughts and prayers to the family.

That's what I was thinking, why would he even be headed in that direction? I guess it was pretty overcast but damn.

Yes, teterboro is west of the Hudson River, so he had to fly out over the Hudson, around the tip of Manhattan and then down the East River quite a ways to even be in the area. There was some mention that he might have been going to White Plains, but that is in the exact opposite direction he was heading.

There has been a report of a Mayday call. I wonder if he went down the East River thinking he could ditch in the River, if necessary, and the plane just went out of control...

I hadn't heard the mayday report, but a lot of helicopters and planes have gone down the East and Hudson Rivers over the years for just that reason--other than Central Park, the waterways are the only open places to attempt a crash landing in the event of mechanical failure--and ESPN reported that Lidle reported a fuel system problem shortly after takeoff. I don't see how that would lead to this crash, though, especially since some eyewitnesses reported hearing the engine revving up.
