Good article by Jack, talking about the kids

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=76265
Things I liked about the article:
1.) Generally upbeat and positive about the future.
2.) Used OPS quite a bit
3.) Gave us some insight into how Young might be used. (Josh Byrnes leaning towards NOT using him at leadoff)
Quote: |
While Young hit leadoff a few times in 2006 and may be the D-Backs’ fastest runner, general manager Josh Byrnes said he does not foresee Young in that role next season, adding, “I don’t really think that’s his skill set.” |
Lets just hope they don't let Eric Byrnes leadoff against righties too much.
Who else thinks that having Drew leadoff might actually help his development as a hitter, forcing him to take more pitches. He only saw 3.69 P/PA in 2006.
(For point of reference, out of 180 batting title qualified hitters in the majors, 3.69 would rank 101st, so worse than the median 3.77)
So I'd like to see that number go up. We know that he can and will go the other way alot. As he starts to recognize inside breaking stuff better, and sees more pitches per at bat, he should be able to reduce his K's and increase his walks. There is no reason that Drew can't put up a .350 or better OBP for an entire season, and right now, that makes him the best option we have for leadoff.
Vs. RHP
Drew
Jackson
Tracy
Quentin
Byrnes
Young
Hudson
Montero/Snyder
On the days that Davanon plays over Byrnes vs. righties they should bat Davanon leadoff and slide everyone down one. The dude gets on base.
Vs. LHP
Drew
Byrnes
Jackson
Quentin
Young
Tracy
Snyder/Montero
Hudson

You want Hudson to bat 7th and 8th? Might be kind of a slap in the face to our best hitter in the 2nd half. Can't imagine being more familiar with the league will hurt him that much either.
I'd slot Hudson in the 2.

Not optimum if considering OBP for top two slots

Did anyone notice anything in this quote?
Quote: |
While there is still a chance that one of the young guns could be dealt if the D-Backs can land a top starter, odds are that Stephen Drew, Carlos Quentin and Chris Young will enter spring training as starters and Miguel Montero could form part of a platoon at catcher. With shortstop Drew in the lead, the youngest D-Backs seemed to assimilate well in their rookie season. |
No Jackson mentioned. He's not untouchable, apparently. Maybe our speculations on here were not so farfetched?

Didn't Hudson rake in the 7 hole this season?

He had a nice 2nd half...but he still only had a 100 OPS+ last year, which is a career high for him. His Career OPS+ is 95
I want more.....MUCH more out of the #2 spot in the order. Forget what you know about the "type" of hitter you want in the 2 spot...the slappy contact guy and all that. You want your best hitter, or one of your best in the 2 spot. If Hudson is one of the teams best hitters next year, they are in a world of hurt.

100 OPS+ from a second baseman is very good. we're not talking a manny ramirez caliber glove here. and what really is the problem of having hudson in the #2 spot? wherever he feels comfortable, that's where you play him. # 2 or #7, it's all academic. won't make much of a difference in how many runs the dbacks score.
of course, this won't stop the wise guys on this forum from debating how long hudson should stay in the # 2 hole next year. my answer: he'll be there until his levitra is over...

Why did I just know you were going to come "rushing to Hudson's defense", and completely miss the point.
100 OPS+ is fine for a second baseman. So is 95 for that matter. But thats not what I was talking about. I was talking about putting better hitters higher in the lineup, and giving them MORE AT BATS.
Yeah..yeah..."the book" says batting lineup doesn't matter.....however it has also pretty much been established you should have your best couple of hitters in the 1-2 spot. It does make some difference. At least I believe it does.
Hudson is not one of the best couple of hitters on this team, or rather, I seriously doubt he will be one of the best two hitters on this team next year.

Bill James says tinkering with the lineup makes little difference assuming you're smart enough to put your best hitters in the upper half of the lineup.

How did I know you were going to attack my defense of Hudson and completely miss the point?
Projected OBP of Dbacks, 2007, ranked by OBP (projected regulars)
Jackson, 1B, .372
Quentin, RF, .361
Tracy, 3B, .349
Hudson, 2B, .348
Young, CF, .336
Drew, SS, .335
Byrnes, LF, .323
Catchers, ~ .326
Hudson should have good enough OBP and has enough speed to be put in teh #2 spot, if that's where he feels comforable. If he doesn't care where he hits, sure, put him anywhere. But he's projected to have the 4th (close to 3rd) best OBP on the team next year. What's wrong with having him in the #2 spot?

So, we're done selling statistics and have moved into the faith-based business?
Believe me, where Hudson bats next year is AZ's smallest problem.

OK...lets simplify this, in chronological order:
1.) I put out a proposed lineup based on putting a couple of our best hitters at the top of the lineup.
2.) DirtyGary questioned why I put our "hottest second half hitter" in the 7 or 8 spot.
3.) I explained why I constructed my lineup that way.
4.) You jumped in and "defended" hudson in a manner completely out of context the actual discussion. We are not discussing the same thing.
5.) Putting your best couple of hitters at or near the top of the lineup helps team offense. Putting a couple of your worst hitters at or near the top of the lineup hurts offense. This is not really very debateable....only how much it helps or hurts is debateable. Unless your are Bob Melvin incognito.
The end. |

Just for the record, I have no problems with your lineups (post 1). Just like I have no problems with Hudson batting 2nd.
The end.
