I don't find myself praising Mitch Lichtman (mgl) much, but I agree with this take on bunting. I didn't see the game, but apparently Jeter bunted in the first inning with a man on first. here is mgl's conclusions as to bunting in general and a link to the whole piece (gotten through Primer)

3) When the defense is playing back, a sac bunt attempt by a good bunter and good runner is probably better (RE and WE higher) than swinging away, pretty much no matter how good a hitter you are, and again, Jeter is simply not that good of a hitter versus Verlander.

4) When the defense is playing way up in anticipation of a bunt, the bunt attempt is probably worse than hitting away, even for a very weak hitter.

I am generally in agreement with the philosophy of going opposite of what is expected.

You guys just caused another movie flashback.... Little Big Man:

Jack Crabb: I didn't say that. There are thousands of Indians down there. And when they get done with you, there won't be nothing left but a greasy stain. This ain't the Washite River, General, and them ain't helpless women and children waiting for you. They're Cheyenne brave, and Sioux. You go down there, General, if you've got the nerve.

General Custer: Still trying to outsmart me, aren't you, mule-skinner. You want me to think that you don't want me to go down there, but the subtle truth is you really don't want me to go down there!

I think this is kind of like what Bomel was going for.

Most of his in game "strategy" moves were so mind numbingly obvious to everyone, that sometimes the oppoing manager must have thought..

"he can't be this simple minded...can he? whats he got up his sleeve?"
