No problems here at time of writing. Unfortunately, such performance dips are probably the inevitable result of a shared hosting server, where we have to split the resources with several hundred other sites - all it takes is one process to hog the database connections, and we'll be grinding until it gets taken down.

It'd be nice to move to a dedicated server, where we have the sole use of the resources, but since some guy in St. Louis won the $250m Powerball, rather than me, it won't be happening this week. Wink

Just out of curiousity, what would be the cost of a dedicated server?

Well considering the low number of users we curently have, building one wouldnt be that expensive. Some decent software is a bit pricey but there are cheaper options. I think the big expense would be bandwidth because it's a reoccuring cost every month.

I can't really say I know software other than to install it. I'm a hardware kinda guy.

We're not that kind of site, despite the best efforts of the spammers.

Thank you for contacting technical support. Smile

http://www.startlogic.com/products_dedicatedserver.html

From $99/month

A cheaper alternative would be:

http://www.startlogic.com/products_virtualserver.html

From $29.95/month

The downside would be that both these are "unmanaged servers". Basically, the hardware and networks would be theirs, but everything else is up to us to manage and configure. I'd probably be able to cope with the initial config, but if anything went wrong, not sure I have the necessary sysadmin skills to resolve any issues. Say our DB went down, for whatever reason: on shared hosting, I just bitch at the hosting provider till it gets fixed, but on virtual-dedicated or dedicated, we'd be on our own.
