pat the bat?? NO NO NO
PHILLY TALKING ABOUT MOVES TO BE MADE IN THE OFFSEASON. PAT BURRELL AND WHERE HE MIGHT BE TRADED TO AND THIS WAS ONE OF THEM!!!!
Arizona: The Diamondbacks were 24th in the majors in
homers. Jeff Moorad, who was Burrell's agent when he signed his 6-year, $50 million deal with the Phillies, is now the team
president. And Burrell lives in the Phoenix area in the offseason. So there could be a fit.

Burrell will never sell on this message board. However, I've heard a number of women that claim that Burrell has a really "cute butt" ... so Phillies fans should try their wares on "other" message boards.

Burrell can't give this team anything that Hairston wouldn't. |

How about that veteran leadership we will so need?
Chicks will love him. (Warning, SFW but not safe for your sexuality!)
I'm not as down on him as you guys but I don't think we need him. He's a 30 HR guy, so although he can hit one out he's not that 'big bat' that would have us thinking he can hit it out at any time.
One thing for sure is that his annual numbers are all over the place. He does consistantly draw walks though.

It's not that I'm "down" on him....he had a.292 EQA and 4.9 WARP, so he is not a bad ballplayer. Defense not so hot...but he hits with power and walks alot. And he may do better outside of Philly.
I just think the D Backs can get similar production from Hairston, or a Byrnes/Davanon platoon for ALOT less money and at no cost in terms of prospects.

Does he style his chest hair? this metrosexual thing is out of control. Just like the way, there's an uproar over waifs, and now the fashion world is banning the herion/skeleton look....this just in, anyone trimming chest hair for metrosexual purposes, will be kicked in the balls repeatedly for 6 hours for the first offense..
I know weak..

DAVANON TO RETURN
Jeff DaVanon attended the regular season finale, using a wheeled cart to get around on his surgically repaired left ankle, and said he already has accepted his $1.25 million player’s option for 2007.
DaVanon had until five days after the regular season to declare his intentions.
With his return, the outfield could be full, barring a trade. General manager Josh Byrnes has said Eric Byrnes, Chris Young and Carlos Quentin will be the starters, left to right, next season. |

Buh bye Scott.....unless Byrnes or Davanon are traded, or they decide to go with 5 outfielders, all of which is possible, but none of which is very likely IMO |

Even if Scotty remains, BoMel would use him less than Andy Green as long as he has PVs Davanon/Byrnes to play with. |

No, he'll be asking for a trade. The difference between him and Andy Green is that Hairston has the talent to be a major league player. |

Hairston has nothing to gain by being sent to Tucson again next year. He needs to either make the club or be traded to a team who will appreciate his talents. |

Hairston is out of options, if I am not mistaken.
He will either be on the 25 man, traded, or released.
he has too much value to release of course...so I am guessing he will be traded...unless the team does something unexpected and creates a spot for hiim by trading Byrnes or Davanon.
Davanon probably has some trade value too...so don't discount the possibility...although obviously he is a better "platoon partner" for Byrnes. |

I'm a Hairston fanboy and all but if the choice was between keeping Hairston or DaVannon, I'm going with DaVannon. You have to consider the roles the two are likely to play and a reseve OF needs versatility. DaVannon can be used anywhere in the OF (even if he shouldn't, lol) and Hairston can only play in LF.
If you make the choice of Hairston vs. Byrnes, I'd probably keep Hairston, just for the fact that I'm becoming a Byrnes hater (for no great reason at all).
/I really have to work on being less cynical. TAP dropped a Joe G reference I made a long time ago that was an awful thing to say. |

Argument for Burrell...
He'd be moving to a hitter's haven
He's already under contract through '08 (gone after 2 years)
Phillies would definitely kick in cash to cover his salary
He's not all k's (197 BB in the last 2 years)
He's an upgrade over Tracy on O and D
Phillies would probably want Tracy in return - which allows the D-backs to add a better defender at 3B |

He's already in one. Or at least already in a homer heaven, and thats his game. Citizens bank ranked as 5th most homer friendly and 8th most run friendly park in the majors. I wouldn't expect too much of Chase Field Bump.

I guess thats a plus....if he isn't that good, the d backs would not be stuck with him blocking C-Gon or Upton. So does that make him a stopgap?
Did we mention he has a FULL NO TRADE CLAUSE

They better have a BIG foot. He's owed 27 million. The more cash they kick in, the more they are going to ask for in terms of prospects.
Quote: |

Yes...already acknowledged...this is how he gets a high EQA and respectable WARP1 Rating.
Quote: |

Agree. And this is the biggest reason to consider him.

If they just have to trade Tracy, and don't have to trade a prospect, and Philly kicks in about 10 million, maybe....
Then they of course have to trade BOTH Byrnes and Estrada for pitching.
It could work I guess.
But in the end, I think they will just stick with Byrnes.

I don't see Burrell coming here, for several reasons
Burrell isn't great shakes on defense, and I think JByrnes has seen enough of Gonzo's D in LF
He costs too much money, and the Phills won't eat that much of his contract
He has a no trade clause and probably won't waive it, even though he might
***
That being said, if the Phills DO eat a huge chunk of his contract, and Burrell DOES waive his no trade, then maybe...
Which brings us back to Burrell's D in LF
ARoM projects Byrnes's D in LF next year at +1
And he projects Burrell's D in LF next year at 0
***
I probably won't HATE the idea of Burrell in LF, but I sort of don't see it

Spent more time looking at Burrell. The guy can walk, gotta give him that.
He was born Oct. 10, 1976. He will turn 30 in just a few days.
He's due $13m next year and 14m in 2008. Obviously, too much.
Eric Byrnes:
He was born Feb. 16, 1976. He is already 30.
He's due a pretty good raise next year, probably to around 5m.
Burrell has had a real weird career; a lot of ups and downs. Still, his career EQA is .287; his EQA the last 3 years was: .279, .301, .295
Bpro gives him a career rate of 99 in LF (100 = average)
Byrnes's career EQA is .261; his last 3 years he was .272, .188/.192, ,263
Bpro gives him a career rate of 105 in LF
***
In short, if the Phillies kick in A LOT of cash, and the Dbacks can flip Byrnes for pitching, I'd certainly upgrade in LF. Burrell will be a big upgrade with the bat, and not that much of a downgrade defensively.
Of course, Burrell would have to waive his no trade, but he might. And he'll be gone in a couple of years, just in time for Upton/Gonzalez. Not to mention that NOW is the time to sell high on Eric Byrnes, not next year.
***
Would the Phils trade Burrell + a lot of cash for Estrada and Cruz? If they do, and pay half of Burrell's salary for next year, I'd do it.
Would the Phillies want Byrnes too? Who knows... but if they do, they'd better pony up something really nice for him...
