PHOENIX -- Andy Green feels like he did right by the Diamondbacks this year, and he's hoping the organization will return the favor in the offseason.
Green met with general manager Josh Byrnes on Friday to discuss his desire to have the organization sell his rights to a team in Japan.
"I respect the way Josh does business," Green said. "He was very honest with me, as I was with him, and we'll just see what happens from here."
Byrnes declined to comment about his meeting or Green's future.
Green was named the Triple-A Pacific Coast League's MVP last year after hitting .343 and leading the league in runs, hits, doubles and triples. The performance also drew interest from Japanese teams, who approached the D-Backs about acquiring his rights.
"I wasn't willing to cross that bridge at that point in time," said Green, who had his sights set on trying to stick in the big leagues after spending 46 games with Arizona in 2004 and 17 last year.
After being the final player to make the 25-man roster out of Spring Training, playing time was scarce all season for Green. A Japan League team, he said, showed interest in him again around the All-Star break.
"It was very lucrative, but the organization wasn't at the point where they thought it was wise to part ways with me, which I can understand," Green said.
When a team from Japan wants to buy a player's rights, it puts together a pool of money. Part of that money goes to the Major League organization for his rights and what's left goes to the player's salary.
Because the players in front of him stayed healthy throughout the season, Green received scant playing time this year, compiling just 86 at-bats and starting only five games.
The D-Backs are not obligated to sell Green's rights. They can keep him on the 40-man roster throughout the offseason and control him next year. If they want to remove him from the 40-man roster this winter, he would have to be placed on waivers, where he can be claimed by another club.
"I spent this entire season doing what I thought was best for this ballclub, and I put this organization at the forefront," Green said. "Now it looks like my future here is non-existent, so I know the ballclub will do what's best for me and allow me to go to Japan and to allow me to try and better my career. We'll see what the offers are as they come in this offseason. I'm extremely excited about the possibility of playing over there." |
If the D-Backs do decide to sell his rights to Japan, I wish him all the best of luck.
But, he was supposed to be our utility guy since Counsell is leaving town.

He seems like a good enough guy but I won't miss him a bit. If that is what he wants they need to do that for him. |

If Green did have any type of future with the organization (which personally I doubt) the emergence of Alberto Callaspo changed that plan.

If I were in Andy's shoes, I'd be excited about expanding my world (and continuing career) in Japan. I'm sure he'd gain a great deal from the experience. |

yeah, good luck to the guy. it was pretty clear he wasn't going to get much of a chance here, so i hope he does well over there.

And then Alberto Callaspo rode into town.

Honestly, I hope that Counsell does not get any full time play offers on the free agent market and agrees to sign for one year 1 million next year.
His defense is GREAT at THREE postions. It's amazing really...move him to any of 2b, SS, and 3b and he plays like has has played there all year.
I would love to have him back next year along with Callaspo backing up the Hudson/Drew/Tracy. |

What team is likely to sign Counsell with a guarantee of playing full time?

That is VERY unlikely. A few teams would sign him as utility guy, so he might choose one that either offered the most money or had the best chances of post season play... and there's always a chance of stepping in full time due to injury or other circumstances. Just don't see anyone picking him up with the idea of starting full time.

Put me in the camp of folks that hope nobody offers him a starting position, and he re-signs. The man can sub effectively at all 4 infield positions, and if anyone goes down due to injury at 3rd, ss, or 2nd, he could easily replace them with defensive value to the team. I added 1st as a position he can effectively sub because he has played it, and with his defensive instincts, I'd have no problem if he played a game a week-10 days there to spell Jackson. I really don't think Tony Clark will be back as a player. The team will still pay him obviously, but unless he totally rocks spring training, I don't see him making the team. For a team like the D-Backs, that are going to most likely have to carry 12 pitchers, they can't really use a bench position on a guy that can only play one non-catching position in the National League.
I hope the front office is up front with him, and shows their desire to re-sign him if he doesn't get any offers to be a regular player on another team. I just wonder if he already has some hard feelings towards the organization. He doesn't voice his opinions to the media, but that doesn't mean that he may or may not feel they have been unfair to moving out some of the PV's.
It's easy to use the right cliches, about it being business and all, but all the people involved are human beings and are succeptable to hurt feelings. I seriously doubt any of us fans would want a player on the team that "wants" to sit on the bench.

I should add here that Levski is going to slap me for that post about Counsell, because he feels strongly that the super utility role should go to Callaspo. If Counsell stays here to fulfill that role, than Callaspo gets Andy Green's role....which of course was no role at all. |

Given BoMel's love for PV (and special *heart* place for Couns), Callaspo would be certain to become Andy Green next year.

Well, whether I slap you or not is a moot point as someone will give Counsell either a full time job or more money than the Dbacks would...
I think the Dbacks should let Green go to Japan. The guy is not young, and he needs to make some money before he calls it quits...

How dare you guys let him talk "smack" like this. We still have a weekend series, and this guy is talking about playing on another team next year? He is excited about playing somewhere else next year?
Let me clear my head....this is of course Gonzo's fault. He obviously has gotten into Green's head. I think I heard the Padre's radio crew say that Green actually had the balls to read a magazine about Japan in the dugout! |

Yep, that veteran influence spread like a cancer.

Everybody's a comedian today...
When Mike Tulumello of the East Valley Tribune asked Melvin about the possibility of Luis Gonzalez heading to the Padres next year, Bob didn’t miss a beat.
“We’d hit him every time,” Melvin deadpanned.

Callaspo doesn't need to be the "Super-Utility"...he'll probably end up starting for Tracy or Hudson...who could be traded
Clearly that is just idle speculation and has no backing to it whatsoever. |

Maybe we are being a little hypocritical for jumping on Gonzo and not Green but there is a bit of a difference. Green averaged just over 1 AB every other game. He knows that he doesn't have a future in MLB and woud like to go somewhere that he can play. |

I think Big Cat was being faceitous. I didn't take it as jumping on Green.
Opie deserves a break. He didn't say peep all year while Damion Easley stole all his at bats. |
