I'm not sure on the rules of things like this, but are the Diamondbacks going to get any compensation draft picks like they would if he had left like a normal free agent? Or are they out of luck because they willingly declined his option? |

Compensation draft picks have been eliminated from the CBA, effective next year. |

Even if it were (which I'm not sure it's not) you'd have to offer Gonzo arb and I think the minimum a player can earn is 80% of previous salary.
Gonzo for 1 years at 80% is not a deal we'd want to be stuck with considering the actions the team has made so far. |

The elimination of draft picks is not in stone, but I think both sides are agreeable to it from what I read.
The maximum salary reduction only applies to 3-6 year players, not those who have played for more than 6 years so Gonzo could get less than 80% of his salary.

It was in Article XX in the old agreement--not sure where it is now. |

Has a new CBA been negotiated?
What will happen when this one expires on New Year's Day? |

Rumblings: Clubs Notified that Draft Pick Compensation to be Dropped in Upcoming CBA
28th August 2006
Ken Davidoff of Newsday reported just over a week ago that teams may no longer receive draft picks as compensation for free agents who leave as part of the upcoming CBA.
Now comes word through sources that all the clubs have been notified that this indeed will be the case as both the Players Association and MLB have come to terms on the matter. This would explain, in part, why Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee have been on the trading block. Both the Nationals and Rangers have been hot to try and get something for these two players before free agency forces both clubs to possibly walk away without anything for these two top players that were not dealt at the trading deadline.
Stay tuned.
