This just in (from a reliable source):
Cleveland is reported to be interested in Craig Counsell; while Gonzo is apparently drawing some interest from the Rangers, Orioles, and Tigers (sorry, McCray...).
If it happens, remember, you heard it here first!
(And if it doesn't, expect to hear me say, "Did I say reliable source? I meant to say, a reliable souse!)

No beachfront paradise locale for Gonzo, eh. Will be harder to get the triplets excited about moving to those places, and Gonzo may not be real keen on reuniting with Buck in Dallas.

When we were kids, our parents didn't bother to even try to get us excited about moving -- they just announced, "We're moving." It's not as if we had a vote - or even a choice -- in the matter!
As for a Showalter-Gonzalez reunion... Well, we may see how badly Gonzo wants to continue his career!

Okay, so no Buck, but Detroit is famous for its quality schools and playgrounds, and there's always Russ Ortiz and the allure of another WS ring in Baltimore.

Please do note that the report does not say that Gonzo is interested in Arlington (TX), Baltimore, or Detroit; but that these teams are thinking about him...

LOL... my first year teaching was in inner city Detroit. (we had six shootings, two stabbings, and two days off when student protestors took over the principal's office that year)

Reportedly a number of disgruntled PVs in the Dbacks dugout that didn't like Buck's dictatorial managerial style, with Gonzo prominently in that 2000 team mix that faltered at the end of the season. Gossip hound Pedro Gomez was in the forefront reporting on the alleged "bad chemistry" and unhappiness to the point that JC made the late season move to remove Buck as manager.

Yeah, and Brenly came in with his 2 rules written on a napkin: 1) Be on time; 2) Get it done.
After Buck's novel about the "Diamondback Way", this was a breath of fresh air to the vets.

Please don't shoot the messenger... It was only a report, not an endorsement. (Hence the "Sorry..." part of the message...)
If you have a problem with the contemplated action, please take it up with the management of the Detroit Tigers...
Have a nice day!

In a way, it would be fitting for Gonzo to return to the Tigers. Last time he was a Tiger, he was so mediocre they traded him and $500K for Karim Garcia. Now that he's below average again, Detroit wants him back. And some of you guys think our FO is screwed up... |

More information...
Look for Chip Hale to replace Mike Aldrete as the Diamondbacks hitting coach (unless he's stolen away by Mike Rizzo for the Nationals organization... )
Among the scouts reported to be in the stands today for the start by Juan Cruz is one from Philadelphia... a bundled deal with Estrada is a possibility...

For whom is the $60,000 question.

For which, unfortunately, there isn't (yet) even a $0.02 answer...

Rumors are starting to circulate that Buck'll be fired, so Gonzo can feast on some cheap Dallas real estate and not have to deal with Buck. It could be a marriage made in heaven...

The Phillies have a bunch of young pitchers who have not been impressive, but may have some upside. Hammels may be too much to hope for, but he would be the first shot. Madson was bad starting this year but had been impressive before. I'd even look at Gavin Floyd as a potential part of a trade. They have some younger guys too who I am not remembering now. Gonzalez? |

Gio Gonzalez 21 4.66 166/81 in 154 ip at AA.
Scott Matthieson (sp?) 22 99/29 3.21 in 92 at AA; 3.93 36/10 in 34 at AAA. 6"3" 190 lbs. Without having seen him, I'd like him as the centerpiece of an Estrada/Cruz trade. |

Don't we have enough A, AA, AAA hotshot pitching? I think it's Hamels or bust. Estrada AND Cruz? For prospects? No way.

No. This would be like having too much money or too much fun. |

Heh... you're right, but that was a pointed remark towards getting Hamels. Levski doesn't think it's possible, though.
As I stated in the other thread... Brito? Mazone? Someone with more info needs to explain Madson to me.

I've never actually said this here, but I moved to Arizona last year from eastern Pennsylvania and follow the Phillies.
Anyway, the Phillies won't trade Hamels (he's "untouchable") and probably wouldn't trade Mathieson, and even if they would, Mathieson will be out for all of 2007 as he underwent Tommy John surgery yesterday.
As for the other guys mentioned, Brito and Mazone are AAAA players (if that), and Gavin Floyd has been very unimpressive. He only started to show flashes at AAA this season, and still had mediocre stats. He's still young enough that he could evolve into something, but I see him as a fifth starter/journeyman. I don't think Madson is a MLB starter, but should be a quality reliever who can fill in for spot starts. Most of the other guys played in leagues that were hard for me to see, so you should read this thread on a Phillies forum (I hope that link works). |
