It appears Josh Byrnes isn't going to go after Zito or Schmidt or Lilly.
Obviously, he hasn't gotten Gumbadoro's memo. A GM cannot be dumb enough to ignore Gumbo, right? Right?
Which means we'll see another winter of discontent, with trade rumors flying around like Lindsay Lohan punches in a bar fight...
The only problem is that A LOT of teams out there will be going after the same pitchers in trades (i.e., Willis, Westbrook Trout --this one's for you, shoewiz) so any trade might be prohibitively expensive for AZ.
Not to mention that the Dbacks really should be looking to acquire a guy who'll be around in 2008 and beyond, not just 2007...
***
I still like the idea of trading Eric Byrnes for Jason Jennings then locking him up to a two year extension...

I'm siding with McCray, let's go for Bonderman. However, I'd take Jennings if we decide Bonderman costs too much. |

Get Bonderman in here and they will have a chance to go all the way in 2008, and use the extra playoff revenues to sign him as a Free Agent. |

That sounds great, but suspect that the Dbacks won't make any overtures with Byrnes after what came out of the Gonzo meeting--Have painted themselves into corner by declaring Byrnes (the next "fan favorite") will play LF full time next season.
They really should look to sell high on this guy, but will be shocked if they explore this.

In the article, Byrnes mentions Owings and Ohlendorf as possibilities--along with Nippert. This from BA today (organization update) is timely:
by the way, since Ohlendorf was a 2004 draftee, does he have to go on the 40 man or go Rule V?
Quote: |
Best Pitcher: Righthander Micah Owings does not necessarily wow the radar gun with his stuff--a 92-93 mph fastball, slider and changeup--but he gets results and knows how to win. And he did it all in his first full season after being a third-round pick in 2005 out of Tulane.
He was 16-2, 3.33 between Double-A Tennessee and Tucson. He was 10-0, 3.70 after being promoted to Triple-A. He struck out 130 and walked 51 while giving up just eight home runs overall.
Keep An Eye On: Righthander Ross Ohlendorf made the jump from low Class A South Bend to Tennessee without a hitch this season, his third in the organization after being a fourth-round pick in 2004 out of Princeton.
Ohlendorf relies on a hard, sinking two-seam fastball that tops out at 94-95 mph, and he demonstrated superb command, walking just 29 while striking out 125 in 177 2⁄3 innings.
He was 10-8, 3.29 for the Smokies, with four complete games and two shutouts, and was promoted to Tucson for the PCL playoffs. |

in all fairness, it was shoe, i believe, who first tossed out bonderman's name. but i've been watching him for years, so i just jumped on a decorated the bonderman bandwagon. spruced it up a bit. added some streamers, there are cookies. i'm making some punch.
the more i think about it, though, the more i think we'd have to wow detroit with an offer. maybe:
jackson, carlos gonzalez, nippert?
i'd do that trade. jackson would hurt, cargo hasn't proven yet he can control his bb/k ratio, and nippert's just a mess. sure, nip and jackson would haunt us, and maybe cargo too, but this guy could be a co-ace with webb.
hmm... co-aces... what team tried that before in the nlwest, and how'd it work out for them?

I like the idea of using Carlos Gonzalez but he might be too far away for the Tigers to consider. With him in there, I'd also rather deal Tracy than Jackson. Actually, no matter what, I'd rather have it be Tracy than Jackson. |

Didn't Colorado already have Byrnes briefly during 05?
Looking it up....yep, Byrnes was a Rockie for 15 games in July 05. He must have made a real impression...his stay with the team lasted all of 17 days beore he was dealt to the Orioles. |

detroit would pass on that package. trading tracy right now is trading him at his alltime lowest value -- he's just a bad thirdbaseman who k's a lot and has an ass-load of errors.
'sides, the tigers need 1b help, and they need obp. that means it's jackson.
(i'm not just saying this because i won't get sex if tracy is traded, i really don't see the tigers biting at a tracy package.)
i think jackson (strong prospect, already adjusted to MLB pitching), cargo (promise, high upside, no real risk -- even if he doesn't figure out his k/bb, he'll fit right in with detroit's lineup), and nippert (maybe kenny motherfucking rogers can straighten out his mechanics, who knows?) MIGHT be enough.

Yeah, I don't think we're dealing Byrnes to anybody familiar with him.

So if we're going to write off 2007 and assume we'll be in good shape in 2008, who do we go after this offseason to make us better in 08?
We're going to burn Estrada & Hairston for sure and likely a few others. Should we be getting that potent #3 or do we sit it out and assume we can wrap up the #3-5 slots internally in 08 and then just wait for next offseason to get a #2. |

I really don't think the team is writing off '07 by letting the kids play (if that's what they end up doing). Arizona wrote off '05 and '06 - they locked themselves into a ton of mediocrity, despite overwhelming evidence. Next year is the first season ever for the organization where they are going to have upside littered across the field (allegedly). |

I'm pretty sure I mentioned Bonderman first. I only mention this because I want to have my spot on the WS parade floats reserved in addition to my nominal commission. |

I'm not saying we are writing the year off necessarily but that most of us would readily admit we won't be a WS team next year. I'm just stating that if we will be focusing on the 2yr plan vs the next yr plan, how does that play into our offseason trading. |

As a general rule, I'd say that if the team is giving up legitimate talent and/or money, it needs to be on players that are going to be impact players in at least '08 and '09, if not even further. Stop-gaps are effectively a total waste (see: Byrnes, Eric).
To wit: I'd rather see the team overpay for Bonderman (if an extension can be reached), than get Westbrook for market value. |

Add my voice to those saying, "Don't trade Jackson!"
I can't really point to any statistical basis for this, but just watching him in the batter's box over the past several weeks suggests (to me, anyway) that he's starting to "get it" -- and is going to be an excellent hitter, very soon.
My $0.02...

i'll trust you on carlos gonzalez. but still, this team HAS to give up talent to get talent in return. we'd all love to trade estrada for bonderman straight up (maybe detroit throws in cash), but it won't happen.
and bonderman, man -- i've been watching this guy his whole career, and always feeling there's just one little piece missing before he turns into an ace. i think he could do it here. i think jackson will be a great major leaguer, and if lev vouches for carlos gonzalez, i'm a believer in him too. but if those two are untouchables, then WHO do we trade to acquire him?
or if not bonderman, who else? i agree with what was said -- westbrook is a stopgap at best. this team needs another dominant starter to go deep in the playoffs. i think that guy could easily be bonderman. if the price was jackson, i'd sleep easy that night knowing the talent he would have added to the dbacks will be added by bonderman.
so, who would you consider trading for bonderman?
or, who else should we get?

Perhaps the dirty little secret is that all we get is stopgaps until we get LUCKY and two of our minor league pitchers develop into top tier pitchers at the same time, or one of them does it quickly before Webb is gone. |
