ESPN THE MAGAZINE in Saturday morning's edition wrote:
Conte indicates that Bonds knew about steroids

BALCO founder Victor Conte allegedly bragged to an associate that Barry Bonds had intimate knowledge of the designer steroids he received from the Bay Area company, and that the Giants slugger took an active interest in what those substances contained, a source close to Conte told ESPN The Magazine.

The disclosure comes to light amid reports that Patrick Arnold, the Illinois chemist who created the designer steroid THG, has made the same admission to a national media outlet.

Arnold, 39, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids in April. He is scheduled to report to federal prison next week to begin serving a four-month sentence for his part in the BALCO steroid conspiracy.

If true, the disclosure appears to contradict Bonds' sworn testimony before a grand jury in 2004. In a report on that testimony, the San Francisco Chrionicle quoted Bonds as saying that he did not think that a clear liquid he received from his trainer, Greg Anderson, was a designer steroid. Bonds reportedly said that he did not think that Anderson "would jeopardize our friendship" by giving him banned drugs.

However, a source who is close to Conte told ESPN The Magazine that the BALCO founder confided to him that Bonds knew precisely what he was taking. The source said that Conte told him that Bonds came to BALCO to "get jacked."

Reached late Friday night, Conte denied the claim.

The disclosure adds a wrinkle to the case that has hung over Bonds since federal agents raided BALCO in 2003. According to the Chronicle, Jason Giambi testified to the grand jury that Anderson spoke in great detail about the drugs he was being given. According to the source, Conte was at least as forthcoming with Bonds.

In public, Conte has repeatedly said that he had no dealings with BALCO's baseball clients.

Shaun Assael is a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine.

Seriously have to wonder what team is going to take a chance on him next year.

San Francisco Shocker: Bonds is Pregnant

SAN FRANCISCO, California. If you thought the Barry Bonds steroid scandal couldn't get any weirder, think again. The San Francisco Giants today announced that Bonds is pregnant.

"He took too much Clomid for too long," said the team's chief internist Dr. Anthony Salimberi. "Father and child will be fine as long as Barry gets enough flaxseed oil. He also craves ice cream, pickles and chocolate."

Clomid is a female fertility drug that Bonds used at the recommendation of Victor Conte, the disgraced owner of the BALCO lab where the slugger allegedly took steroids. Clomid helps the body recover its natural ability to produce testosterone, and is used by weightlifters to mask the presence of steroids.

Kimberly Bell, the former girlfriend who is planning to write a tell-all book about Bonds, said she plans to throw a baby shower for the man who seems certain to pass Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list if he doesn't go to jail first. "He won't be able to fit into his clothes soon," she said with a playful smile, "once his body catches up with the size of his head."

As the season winds down with the Giants eliminated from post-season play, Bonds is said to be thinking solely about his own personal statistics these days. "I'm taking baby classes to learn how to push real hard and breathe deeply," he said. "I want this to be the most perfect baby ever, except for me."

Bonds' agent, Scott Boras, said the child would be named "Samantha" if it is a girl and "Mark" if a boy. "Barry was inspired to his prodigous feats by Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire's historic home run race in 1998," Boras said, "and it's just his way of saying 'Thanks'."

Boras wouldn't say who the father was, but others have their suspicions. A reporter put the question to the Dodgers' Jeff Kent, who tangled with Bonds while with the Giants, causing the second baseman to issue a testy denial. "Don't look at me, man," he said. "Barry screwed himself."

I hope it's a boy--then he and Barry would have the same size testicles.

[Bonds, Sheffield]

Yet another proof that justice is racist.

I heard some weird blurb on the radio that during the years Barry played for SF his shoe size grew from 10 1/2 to 13. Didn't know roids had that big of an effect on your feet.

It's not the steroids.

The as-yet-untested-for-in-MLB Human Growth Hormone does cause adult bones to grow.

Busy day in sports pharmacy news...

ESPN.com today wrote:
Current and former professional and collegiate athletes have reportedly been linked to an Orlando pharmacy that allegedly sold steroids and other performance enhancers over the Internet.

Federal and state narcotics agents raided the pharmacy Tuesday as part of a New York state investigation into the sale of the performance-enhancing drugs over the Internet.

The Albany, N.Y., Times Union and ABCNews.com are reporting that investigators in the year-old case uncovered evidence that testosterone and other performance-enhancing drugs may have been fraudulently prescribed over the Internet to current and former major league baseball and NFL players, college athletes, high school coaches, a former Mr. Olympia champion and another top contender in the bodybuilding competition.

Among the athletes reportedly on the customer list are former major league pitcher Jason Grimsley, according to the Times Union. The 15-year veteran was suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball in June after his name was linked to a federal drug probe.

The Times Union reported investigators expected to arrest more than two dozen doctors, pharmacists and business owners on sealed indictments charging them with various felonies for unlawfully distributing steroids and other controlled substances, court records show.

Tuesday's raid of Signature Pharmacy, which did about $36 million in business last year, could expose a long list of sports figures, celebrities and others who have turned to Internet pharmacies for illegal drugs such as steroids, law enforcement authorities told the newspaper.

Please, can't anyone these days go from being a 95 OPS+ guy to a 120 OPS+ guy at age 32 without the media crying 'steroids' anymore?

Sylvester Stallone got popped last week and it barely made a blip on the news. It's not easy maintaining his Rocky Balboa physique at the age of 60.

I didn't know that about Stallone. I mean, I suspected it, I just didn't know he got popped.

Apparently Jerry Hairston, Jr. has been named now as well:

Quote:
Llosa/Wertheim: According to a law enforcement document we've reviewed, in May 2004, a doctor A. Almarashi of Queens prescribed Genotropin (human growth hormone) that was sent from Allied Pharmacy -- the compound pharmacy raided in Mobile, Ala., last fall -- to Rangers infielder Jerry Hairston, Jr.

SI.com: There's obviously more than one person with the name Jerry Hairston out there. Why do investigators believe this was sent to this particular Jerry Hairston?

Llosa/Wertheim: Investigators tell us the drugs were sent to addresses in Maryland and Arizona that trace to Jerry Hairston, Jr. Also the document we reviewed indicates that the birth date for the patient file was listed as May 29, 1976, but the prescription database indicates a DOB of May 29, 1967; Hairston Jr.'s birth date, according to MLB.com, is May 29, 1976. The document indicates investigators' belief that the last two numbers of the birth year as noted in the prescription database were inverted.

There's more, including Hairston's reply, in the article.
