As voted on by his peers.
Based on the 16 N.L. managers' ballots, Melvin got six votes. The Phillies' Charlie Manuel received five.

As one of Biff Melvin's bigger critics, I do have to congratulate him on getting the Dbacks to the League Championship series. With that said, awarding him Manager of the Year is a joke! He is still the absolute worst game manager I have ever seen. I have yet to see him make a crucial decision during a game that was a deciding factor in winning it. The main difference I see this year than in years past is he finally smartened up and realized he's an idiot, and surrounded himself with a better coaching staff behind which he could hide his ineptitude.
Additionally, I'd like to point out that Bob Melvin, the sexy pick for NL Manager of the Year, was ridiculously outmanaged by Hurdle this series.
Two key situations come to mind: 1) letting Valverde walk the go ahead run in game 2, when it was obvious he couldn't find the strike zone with a candle, and had thrown more pitches than any other time this season, or the last 3 seasons; and 2) leaving Micah in last night to face Matsui and then Holliday. The hit by Smith was a bad break; the error by Jackson was even worse. There's no excuse for leaving Micah in any longer, he obviously didn't have it. At that point of time, COL had scored only 2 runs, and I feel pretty confident that Cruz would've gotten the last out in that inning, and that the bullpen would've held the Rockies scoreless the rest of the way. It doesn't mean the Dbacks would've still scored on Snyder's homer, but it does mean that Melvin was again a step slow and a penny short. He deserves just as much blame for AZ's losses as the players do.
BoMel's got pwn3d by Hurdle. Period.

Congrats to BoMel on the award... and he's definitely deserving for the season, which is what the writers considered for the award.
I fear that he will remain well regarded for the long haul of the season.. where his people/communication skills maintains a harmonious clubhouse that operates on an even keel.... BUT... he will always lack the tactical skills that can make a difference in the post season. The Dbacks may win the WS sometime during the coming 5 years w/ BoMel still at the helm... but it will be because they have overwhelming talent that didn't require BoMel to make the correct pitching move at the proper time.
