Tried finding earlier thread, but it must be buried pretty deep....

NPR did a short blurb story about how Into Great Silence is now surprisingly going into a third week at the Valley Art in Tempe.

I loved this film and wrote up a review a couple weeks ago. It's definitely not for the masses... and won't suit most people, but if you're looking for some quiet meditation for over 2.5 hours and some beautiful photography... this could fit the bill.

I read about this movie when it first came out and I would really like to see it. I dont believe it has made it here to Tucson I may have to make the drive up.

Nice review. Now I really want to drive up. How long will it be up there? Do you know if it will make it to Tucson? There is a theater here called the Loft that tends to show movies like this but I have not heard if it will be showing this?

The Loft is the best arthouse place in Tucson... no connection with Harkins. If you can find a contact person at the Loft, they might be able to tell you. There's a French language DVD out shortly, but the more extensive (with extras) English subtitled version will be out... in October... in case you're not able to see it in a theater.

Harkins has monopolized the arthouse audience here in Phoenix for a number of years--so most of the indie/independent films either screen at the Camelview 5 or the Valley Art (in Tempe).

There's also the people who put together the Phoenix Film Festival (who have good relationship w/ Harkins), who bring a few independent films to town for special screenings... Join the Phoenix Film Society and you get notices for these screenings, which are held at one of three Harkins locations.

Pollack Tempe Cinemas (1825 East Elliot Road) has occasional weekend arthouse fare as part of its One Night Cinema series. Following is their upcoming schedule:

Opens June 8 - Eve and the Fire Horse (Canada)
Opens June 15 - Poison Friends (France)
Opens June 22 - Live-In Maid (Argentina)
No Film The Weekend of 6/29
Opens July 6 - Allegro (Denmark)
Opens July 13 - Private Fears In Public Places
Opens July 20 - Amu (India/USA)
No Film The Weekend of 7/27
Opens August 3 - Killer of Sheep (USA)

* Note: Killer of Sheep is getting rave reviews from critics and is the ONE film I was most hoping to see; however, it's going to be here the same weekend I'm heading to LA to see the Dbacks play (c'est la vie)

We used to have a Madstone Theater here for a couple years that offered welcome competition to the Harkins monopoly, but they pulled out. Harkins upped the ante and essentially made the situation financially impossible for Madstone to establish itself here. Crying or Very sad

No telling... I'm a bit surprised that it's now into its third week. But there may be a sufficient community into spiritual related material--recently What the "bleep" ran at the Valley Art for about a year.

Check the Harkins website or one of the moviefone type sites on either Wednesday or Thursday, and put in Friday's date there to see what will be screening then--if it's listed for Friday then the movie will run there at least another week.

The Loft in Tucson is showing Killer of Sheep July 6 - 12. This 1981 film is finally getting a few screenings after years of neglect, despite overwhelming critical raves... It's going to be showing one weekend in Tempe, but I'll be watching the Dbacks in LA that weekend...

Summer blockbuster season is generally the pits for me (although I'm looking forward to upcoming weekend releases the the latest Pixar feature and Michael Moore's documentary on the health care system).

Two films made for adults that go against the general mindless fare:

A Mighty Heart -- Angelina Jolie stars as wife of Daniel Pearl during his ill-fated kidnapping. Intense re-telling but not especially provocative.

La Vie En Rose -- impressionistic Edith Piaf biopic that selects a few keys from her tragic life to show what drove her as an artist. Great acting performance by Marion Cotillard... and the music is Piaf (lip synched by the actress)

Pixar has yet to make a wrong move. Add Ratatouille to their list of winners--Directed by Brad Bird (The Incredibles and The Iron Giant), this ranks among Pixar's best. It works for all ages and across mentalities, so you can take your kids and enjoy it as well.

Have seen it twice--once at late night "midnight showing" with lots of rowdy teens and young twenties in the audience and the second time at early matinee with several parents with very young kids in tow. Both screenings were loudly applauded at the end. (Note: it may not work with anyone under the age of two, however)

I thought ratatouille was decent but not in the same categorie as pixar's previous movies. Kind of cute and kind of funny but I dont know that Ill ever watch it again personally.

I also went to transformers yesterday which I thought was pretty lame. I really think it was geared towards the 18 and under crowd way too much cause I found the lead actor to be rather annoying, a lot of the dialogue to be retarded, and much of the story to be contrived. The special effects were good but not enough to carry the movie I thought.

I guess I should have included La Vie En Rose as being on my radar as well. I just have a feeling I'm not going to end up finding the time to catch it in the theatres. During the summer, my love of movies has to share time with my love for baseball, and my 7 games in 6 days midwest baseball trip is coming up in less than three weeks.

I saw You Kill Me. A very clever film. Basically, a romantic comedy wrapped in the guise of alcoholism and mafia hits.

Eagle vs. Shark was not quite as clever. It seemed like it was trying too hard to be quirky and offbeat.

Last night I saw The Big Bad Swim, a slight but charming "relationship" film.

Played hookie (or is it hooky?) from work and took my boy to Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix. Like the book, it really didn't move the whole story line very far along. Nice special effects, the wand battle at the end was ninjariffic. If you're a Potter fan, you can't miss it.
