is to homer on change-ups and curves and hit basehits up the middle on fastballs the rest of the year. There's reasons why for this approach, that's my message for the week.

Livan's Job...
Is to keep the ball down in the zone and in the park. He starts tonight against the Gnats and Sunday against the Doggers. He needs to turn in a couple of good starts. That's my message for the week. |

One great (AT&T) and one decent (Dodger Stadium) pitcher's park for Livan this week should hopefully help Livan meet his goal.

and O-dog's job is to be in the dugout with pom-poms in hand and cheering like it's homecoming (not banging the pom-poms together too hard though for risk of re-injury)

Didn't O-Dawg have his surgery today? Don't expect him to be in the dugout.

According to Schulte on KTAR this morning, Hudson is hoping to re-join the team in the dugout for the LA series this weekend.

He had best refrain from giving high fives with his left hand then...
Noogies OK... but NO high fives!

From ESPN on players who need to step up.
Arizona's lineup, which wasn't very good to begin with, suffered a big loss when catalyst and clubhouse energizer Orlando Hudson went down for the season with a thumb injury. Is the Diamondbacks' broadcast team ready for a combination of Alberto Callaspo and Emilio Bonifacio at second base?
Eric Byrnes deserves to finish in the top 10 in the MVP balloting and Chris Young has 30 homers in his rookie season, but they could use some consistent help. Manager Bob Melvin shifted Drew to the leadoff spot last week, and Drew responded with a three-run homer in a 9-8 victory over St. Louis. By Monday, Drew was back in the sixth spot.
Drew hit .316 in 59 games in 2006, but he's been an underachieving puzzle this season. He's hitting .227 with a .303 on-base percentage, and teams have worn him out by pounding him inside with fastballs and feeding him breaking balls away.
For a while, the same scouts who criticized brother J.D. for lacking passion were content to cut Stephen some slack and call him "even-keeled." But it's been a trying year for both Drews.
"A lot of people are looking at [Stephen] and wondering whether he has a case of 'the brother,'" said an American League scout. "He's a far superior player to what he's done production-wise. I never thought I was looking at a .230 hitter. He's been a real noncontributor for them." |

Aw Christ...what a bunch of assholes.
Does ANYONE who watches this team every day think that EFFORT is Drew's problem? |

poor guy, he can't get away from the rep his brother has received.
Drew's hustle is always overlooked because its not as flamboyant as Byrnes'....
i guess humility is a lost art

I totally agree with thath..
But Drew hustles all the game... He never misses a ball in the field for not putting enough effort .. He'll adjust to pitching the same way pitching adjusted to him.

All ESPN does is look at the stats in front of them. They obviously don't watch all the games, Drew's been a solid contributor this season even with the low BA.

I'm not sure I would call Drew a solid contributor this season. I would expect him to put up numbers equal to Tulowitzki. Perhaps it's the Seitzer affect. We will see next season. I'm a big fan of Stephen. |

I too am a big fan of Stephen Drew. However, I don't think it is necessarily a given that he'll become a good hitter UNLESS he forgets about pulling the ball all the time. Seems to me that is his biggest problem: attempting to pull away pitches far too much.
Mostly he's hit popup fly balls or weak grounders that way because of this pull-happy tendency. However, a couple of games ago he had two solid line drive hits to the opposite field, something he seldom has done all year long. And he's hit a couple more balls hard that way since. My hope is that he'll continue that trend.
But, Drew also has two huge holes in his swing: up and in on hard stuff and down and in on sharp breaking pitches. We've all commented on his excessive uppercut swing and that is a killer on those high pitches in particular.
If Drew changes his approach, concentrates on hitting away pitches to the opposite field and shortens/levels his swing on near pitches to hit line drives instead of high fly balls, he can become a productive hitter. If he continues on his current path, I'm not confident of that at all.
As the others posts have illustrated, though, Drew cannot be faulted for effort.

His ratios have been for the most part fine all year. The problem with Drew has mostly been....monday night he could have easily had 4 hits...he's been more of a 250 hitter than the 230 variety, its not unlucky don't get me wrong, just part of the learning curve for him, and his power struggle he had for the first time, in his life, along with being exploited with the pulling of the string down and in.
