Not sure if this is thread-worthy, but I was just watching the video clip of the Davis/Upton Safety Squeeze and something stood out. In slow-mo, you see Upton running in and almost going out of his way to step on Davis' bat near home plate. Not the safest of plays - rolling an ankle, or worse - and I believe he could've avoided the bat.

What was the intent of that? Maybe distracting the catcher? Maybe just a mistake with no reason behind it?

I hope it was to mess up the catcher, because that's dirty baseball and that's what I like to see out of my team.

Also, in the replay, Gibson is the the most fired up guy in our dugout for that play.

If anybody else sees what I'm talking about, and has a theory, please provide.

It looked to me like he was just trying to get the bat out of the way--like you'd do if you expected another runner to follow you in. I think he's just so used to getting the bat out of the way that he didn't even think about the fact that it was a bunt and there'd be no one behind him. He really should have slid, too--it makes me wonder just how much his head was in the game on that play.

I actually believe he was kicking the bat out of the way so he won't step on it. It looked really strange in real time on tv...

It doesn't look like he was running all that hard either.

He was probably trying to kick the bat away like DK said.

And yeah, you gotta love Gibby's reaction. He clearly said "That's what I'm talking about!".

Now that you mention that, I see what you mean.

When Byrnes is running hard, he looks tense and explosive. Upton just sort of glides around. Its like the catch he made. He was flying but he makes it look effortless.

That's a fact. When shoe and I were at Chase a couple of weeks ago sitting next to the kid from Jerry Maguire, the young fan said "Eric Byrnes is the fastest player on the D-backs!" When I was insensitive enough to gently explain that Bonifacio and Upton were the team's two fastest runners, it was like I'd tried to convince him that there is no Santa Claus. He shook his head emphatically and insisted, "No, it's Eric!"

EB's the master of image.
