Steven Drew deserves MVP.
So does Young, Valverde, and all our starters (Webb, Davis, Hernandez).
But Drew's timely hitting and superb defense was outstanding.

Drew has been great on D, and has been smoking hot at the plate. Easily the MVP!

Shoewiz, good thing you picked him back up in your league.

There is no doubt at all that it was Drew. If it is split then it should be Drew/Ojeda just because of all the DPs they completed.

Those DPs saved us... over and over...

And the one turned today in the 5th seemed to take the last bit of life outta the Cubs!

One thing on Livo's pitching today. Even though it was frustrating to watch everytime he walked one of the dead 4 today(Soriano, Lee, Floyd, and Ramirez) at least when he missed the plate he wasn't missing down the middle, or even middle in. He made a conscious effort to stay on the ouside of the strike zone, and I think that was a good way to pitch the big hitters.

Looking back on Livo's start, I don't know how he did it. At times it seemed like he couldn't find the plate to save his ass. But he got 3 huge double play groundballs today. And as Eduardo Perez pointed out, he got 14 of 16 groundballs on balls in play. But what the hell, "Way to go Livo!"

Valverde hit the outside to Soriano on all 4 pitches, and sure enough, the best Soriano could do was sky one to RF. Valverde pitched damn well in this series, as did the entire bullpen.

If the Cubs' three-and-out disappearing act hurt their fans, imagine how TBS felt.

For starters, networks make their money in the postseason with series that go long. More games, more cash.

However, instead of showing Game 4 of the Cubs-Arizona series with a well-rested Carlos Zambrano at noon Sunday, TNT (the game was slated for Turner's sister station) televised a movie called "The Prince and Me."

Not exactly what network officials had in mind.

But the bigger blow was losing the Cubs for the National League Championship Series, which will be carried on TBS.

Chicago is the third-largest market in the U.S. The ratings for the Cubs in the NLCS would have been off the charts here.

Saturday's game did a 15.6 local rating; one ratings point is worth 34,550 households. Undoubtedly, that rating would have been much higher if the Cubs had put up the hint of a fight.

If the Cubs had advanced, a local in the 30s and perhaps even into the 40s would have been expected.

Also, the Cubs have a huge national following. The chance to watch their quest for their first World Series title in 99 years would have attracted casual fans throughout the country.

Now instead of a possible Cubs-Phillies series (TBS isn't sending any thank-you notes to Philadelphia either), the network is stuck trying to hype a Colorado-Arizona showdown.

Ed Sherman / The Chicago Tribune

I hate articles like these. All this means is that the big market teams are supposed to win. And if thats' the case, why even have teams outside of NY, Chicago and LA? It's utter BS, and the fact that it's published is just another scapegoat that Cubs fans can skin and hang on their idol's arm.

That's probably why TBS is screwing us with the 1:30 start time on Thursday. Think about it. Our games is the only game scheduled for Thursday the 11th and we're starting at 1:30 in the West and 4:30 in the East. There is no logical reason other than TBS is sticking it to Dback and Rockie fans. The more logical and ideal time would be 5:00 (6 in Denver) in the West and 8:00 in the East.

D'backs spend their cash wisely

The Cubs were done in by a team with about half their payroll.

Contracts for the 25-man roster of the Arizona Diamondbacks totaled about $35, and that includes $7 million to Saturday night's winning pitcher, Livan Hernandez.

In fact, their starting eight-man lineup Saturday earned a total of less than $14 million, led by Eric Byrnes' $4.5 million.

Five players — Chris Young, Conor Jackson, Mark Reynolds, Augie Ojeda and Miguel Montero — were making less than $400,000 each. The major-league minimum is $380,000.

Just by themselves, Alfonso Soriano, Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez were paid a combined $30 million this season.

Many of the contributors on the Diamondbacks are in their first season in the majors or part of their second.

"Somebody asked me, 'How do y'all feel about having no experience"' " experienced catcher Chris Snyder said. "A lot of people get caught up with the young team and how they will adjust in the big leagues.

"I told him, 'These guys were the best team in baseball last year with [Triple-A] Tucson, where all they did was win. And when all you do is win, you learn how to do that and you get a feel for that.' "

Dave van Dyck / The Chicago Tribune

Meanwhile, Cubs fans grow increasingly bitter....

The Cubs went gently into that good night on a summerlike October Saturday in Chicago.

Cubs fans? Not so much with the gentle. They went down grumbling.

As the Cubs' season expired, there was something else that officially died: The rapidly fading stereotype that fans at Wrigley Field are just happy to be there, and that winning is secondary when you're partying and drinking cold ones and singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" at the North Side shrine.

As veteran baseball scribe Paul Sullivan observed in a Tribune piece last week, Cubs fans have become much more impatient and judgmental since the infamous Game 6 of the 2003 playoffs. Something seemed to change in the collective psyche of Cubbie Nation. From that point on, you didn't even dare preface "Losers" with "Lovable."

It's not as if Cubs fans were all about the sunshine and beer and the oblivious good times before the fall of 2003, and then suddenly turned into the North Side version of Philadelphia fans. But with each passing year since '03, the boos have come louder and more quickly. From Alfonso Soriano to Jacque Jones to Carlos Zambrano, Cubbie players were peppered with boo-shrapnel at various points in the 2007 season.

On Saturday, as the who-are-these-guys Diamondbacks completed their sweep of the Cubs, the boos came thundering down from thousands of fans who couldn't believe the magical season was coming to such a thudding and underwhelming halt.

They weren't satisfied with a huge turnaround from 2006. They weren't sad about the odometer on the World Series title drought nearing the "100" mark.

They were pissed off.

Uh, Eric Byrnes?

The Dbacks are drafting/trading wisely. That's the big difference.

I thought the same thing when I read it but decided to post the headline unaltered. Wink

Our own Jim McLennan has been guest-writing for THT about the Cubs-Dbacks series.

Here was his first entry on why the Dbacks will beat the Cubs

Here is his second entry on why the Dbacks beat the Cubs

Good stuff, Jim.

Didn't know Roeper did "sports" articles.... Just knew about him being a fungible film critic--fodder for Ebert on his At the Movies show. But he could write similar fluff for the sports pages too.

Looks like Jim borrowed Shoe's numbers from his post on the Nate Silver prediction thread for his point 4.

The end.

Seriously. They're "big bats" did nothing. Would have been amuch different series if they had done anything at all, though.

Yeah, and I think the numbers would have been failry similar comparing the Rockies vs Phillies going into that series, with the NL East being closer to average.

The level of competition was just better in the NL West this year, and very few of the so-called experts took that into account when making their predictions. When you look at the number of wins posted by the D-backs, Rockies, and Padres, as compared to the top 3 teams in the other 2 divisions, how can you discount that and give the edge to teams winning softer divisions?
