The Diamondbacks are 18 games over .500 after tonight's win in Atlanta. If they play .500 ball the rest of the way, they will end up 90-72. Both the Padres and Phillies (second place team and wild card leader, respectively) would have to go 26-15 over their remaining games to surpass Arizona and keep the D-backs out of the playoffs.

Meh. I'm not superstitious. I'm not saying the D-backs can't collapse, because they surely can. I think it is fun to do these analyses, and it does show that if the D-backs even marginally take care of business, it will be hard to keep them out of the playoffs.

7 more vs. Padres.
A lot of baseball to be played. |

True, but even if the D-backs wins only 3 of 7, the Pads gain little ground, and 1/6 of the remaining games are gone. Unless the D-backs lose dramatic ground quickly (and the homestand coming up looks tough), there will be a lot of pressure on the Padres, because they will have to win at least 5 of those games to make any real progress.
Plus, the D-backs have fewer games left and far more at home, so they have some real advantages there, too.

From the "Voice of Doom" Department:
Remember the 1964 Phillies...
They had a 6.5 game lead with 10 games to play...
...and they finished second behind the Cardinals...
As shoewizard said, there's still a lot of baseball to be played.
But the Diamondbacks are in the driver's seat right now; and it's theirs to win...
You go, guys! Keep up the good work!!!

I can't take any credit for my end... I was there when it happened... A broken-hearted young sprout whose team imploded as the season wore down...
Some of my friends even had World Series tickets... that's how close it was...
So, while I am hoping against hope that the Diamondbacks go all the way, I know there is a lot of time between now and the end of the season...

And I was there at the other end of the spectrum ... jumping w/ joy as Harry Caray called that regular season final out (a pop up to Timmy McCarver)

One upon a time, them woulda been fightin' words! But fortunately, by God's grace, enough time has passed, and that wound, even though it left a scar, has healed.
But I still think maybe you should buy me a beer...

Adding fuel to the fire here...
The D-Backs are tied with Boston for the largest division lead (5 games). |

Of the 12 remaining series we have after this ATL one, only 3 involve a team not currently in a playoff race (SF, PIT). And the Dodgers and ROX could be out by the time their series' roll around, which could make the last 18 games easier.
The whole season is the next 19 games. All vs playoff contenders, and 7 vs SD. If we're going to hit that speedbump that knocks us out of the playoffs, it'll be over the next 3 weeks. If we can get through this upcoming stretch and maintain our lead, the Dodgers, SF, PIT, and COL will be ready to lie down to close the season.
It ain't time to start counting down the games yet, but it could be very, very soon.

because we all know that the Dodgers, Rockies and Giants won't be motivated enough to play tough even if they're out of the playoff race

The vets on LA will be phonin it in, and the call-ups shouldn't be able to knock us around. SF has been motivated all season, and is just plain bad. Colorado could be playing callups, as well.
However, as for the timing of counting games left, etc., it's premature until September 1. It's fair game once you get to the last month of the season, but anything farther out assumes too much over too great a time period. 6 weeks leaves a lot of time to cover ground.

It's great to have a team like this.
Love and enjoy every Diamondbacks pitch.

With tonight 71st win we are only 5 away from matching last year's WL record. |

And regardless of the wins, watching this team in the field has been much more enjoyable than last season.

There are too many games left. Against a lot of talented teams.
The plus is 21 home games vs 16 road games left.
They can't really take anyone lightly for the rest of the year.
The collapse that I remember most was the Cubs in the late 60s. With the Bleacher Bums in full force all summer long they carved out a lead. Then suddenly in September the questions were "Where did all the Bleacher Bums go when we needed them most?"
One college kid wrote in, "We had to go back to school."

That was 1969. My 3rd grade teacher was a vocal Cubs fan and I was a mouthy diehard Cardinals fan. We had quite the discussions that season.
That may have been the best year of shoewizard's childhood as his Mets came roaring from behind to take the pennant.

Having grown up in Illinois, I've heard hundreds of Cubs fans bemoan how their '69 Cubs fell apart in September ... but it's nothing like the Phillie collapse of '64. The Amazin's were a damn fine team that season, winning 100 games in the regular season.

Is this the throw caution to the wind jinx thread? If so, let me as the question.... Who will pitch game 3 of the opening series?
Allow me to answer for Levski - "Dude. Too early. Not cool." |
