There has been a lot of talk in the game day threads over this topic, so I thought a poll might be interesting, along with everyone's opinion on this ongoing point of interest.
Here's their overall numbers:
Jackson .279/.365/.456/.821
Clark .249/.305/.517/.822
Since the All-Star break:
Jackson .298/.362/.536/.898
Clark .292/.349/.594/.943
For the month of September:
Jackson .281/.395/.594/.988
Clark .342/.419/.816/1.234
Now if some of you want to add in additional stats/metrics to gauge production at 1st base;cool.
Bring forth your opinions. I'm looking forward to following them here.

With eight games remaining? Too late now...
At this point, play whomever gives us the best chance of winning...
However, had you asked earlier in the season, I'd have voted for Jackson over Clark. |

8 games is a lot of baseball in a tight pennant race. It could end up being more than 8 games.
Melvin seems to be getting good production out of both of them right now by platooning them at 1st for most of this month.
I just find it interesting to read through the game day threads this month and see all the comments in reference to when Clark is started over Jackson with a RHer on the mound.

What is the status of Jackson's wrist? A number of TC's starts were because of that.
What is the status of TC's knees? In a platoon, he will get in the 70% starts range normally. I don't know what the pitching match ups are, but I question whether Clark will be effective for 3 or more days in a row.
Clark is playing well. I would mix and match them, but not necessarily a straight platoon. |

Can I add that I'd be wary of playing Clark too much on the road. 6 of our games are there.

Clark through 8-31: .228/.279/.449 in 183 PA.
Clark since 9-1: .342/.419/.816 in 43 PA.
Clark hasn't been hitting since the break; he's been hitting since September started. In particular, he's been hitting at home since September started. I'm fine with selective platooning with the qualification that as soon as Clark comes back to reality, he is used strictly as a PH again. Clark can play at home against RHP with crappy fastballs, but that's it. |

Yeah - my platoon comment was more about picking matchups - not a straight plattoon, as stu has stated - i agree. |

Exactly.
Clark should never start against a lefty, and as far as I can see, I don't think he has recently. Pittsburgh will be interesting. We face Snell and Morris to start that series, and then lefty Maholm for the 3rd game. I am sure Jackson will start vs. Maholm but Clark may start against both Snell and Morris. I haven't looked at the H2H matchups though, so that, and the status of Jackson's wrist and legs will determine if he gets one start or two in the pittsbugh series.
Right now Francis is lined up to start on the 28th, so you know that jackson will get that start for sure. |

Conor Jackson is the better hitter, he's been the better hitter all season. He's just not 'sexy'. He looks dumb, isn't all that big, doesn't do flips or throw his helmet, doesn't hit deep homeruns, so it doesn't SEEM like he's the better hitter.
I actually thought that last night was perfect for Tony, a rightie with a 85 mph fastball. Like Robert S. said, if thats the guy on the mound, put TC in there cuz he's probably going to hit one out.
Otherwise, CJ all day everyday.

On Tuesday, Bob Melvin sat Conor Jackson for a second consecutive game and had Tony Clark starting at first base in Pittsburgh.
"Each and every day means that much more," Melvin said, "and if there's a little bit of, we think, a small percentage leaning the other way, then I might be apt to do it."
Clark went 2-for-4 in Arizona's 6-5 loss to the Pirates, and Jackson came off the bench to hit a game-tying, pinch single in the eighth. Clark is hitting .348 in September, Jackson .306.
Jackson said he's okay with the decision, and he appreciates the way Melvin talks to players in advance before announcing lineup decisions.
"He's a players' manager," Jackson said of Melvin. "He's letting you know what the situation is. I'd rather be in the loop than out. Me and 'T' are both swinging the bats hot right now."

I am happy that CJ does not take it personally and has a good attitude. It probably bothers him more inside then he is letting on.....but Kudos to him for the way he has handled this, AND for being ready to play and producing when his number is called. |

Melvin's actions are justified right now because both are producing. |

Do Melvin's actions survive scrutiny if we apply his standard to the entire team, though? Clark wasn't benched earlier when he wasn't producing - he was in there for his leadership qualities, then. |

Be fair. Clark started 8 games in March/April when Conor struggled. From May - August when Tony wastn't hitting well he was getting 5-6 starts per month. |

I think you've got to start Clark to get his power in the line up once or twice a week, especially going into the playoffs.
Besides once the D-backs are in the World Series, he and Micah Owings can take turns DHing, Duh.
